  • [01] Europe must defend the people, says President Pavlopoulos in parliament's event for unaccompanied children

"Europe must have a leading role in democracy and peace consolidation," President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Wednesday said at the opening of a two-day event for unaccompanied children refugees organised by the Hellenic Parliament.

"Europe must defend the people," Pavlopoulos underlined.

The Greek President congratulated the parliament for the initiative that is held for a second consecutive year and addressing the children, he said: "The reception today in the temple of democracy is both essential and symbolic. It is essential because we want you to feel that there is family for you and it is symbolic because all the Greek people are welcoming you here today. Because we, the Greeks, understand the meaning of war and refugees."

"For us, if the war does not end, the refugee crisis will not come to an end," he added.

On his part, Paliament President Nikos Voutsis welcomed the children to the parliament noting that the parliament and its members will do whatever possible to feel that they are in a friendly environment.

Migration Policy Minister Yiannis Mouzalas said that "today's event coincides with the terror attacks in Europe. Attacks that will increase the policing and information.
