  • [01] National Council on Foreign Policy meeting on latest developments in Cyprus issue

    The National Council on Foreign Policy (NCFP) chaired by Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias convenes at the foreign ministry to discuss the latest developments in Cyprus issue ahead of the international meeting on January 12 in Geneva.

    Representatives of all political parties, with the exemption of extreme-right Golden Dawn which has not been invited, participate in the meeting. The Communist party does not participate for principle reasons.

    [02] PM Alexis Tsipras visits Kalamata on Friday

    Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras visits the coastal city of Kalamata in the southern Peloponnese on Friday.

    Tsipras will arrive at the Kalamata Special School at 11:30 and then meet the local mayor Panagiotis Nikas at 12:30 at the town hall. At 13:30 he will take part in a ceremony inaugurating the Kalamata ring road at the bridge of the River Nedon.

    Infrastructures and Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis referred to the new Kalamata motorway that is delivered on Friday, a motorway of high standards, speaking on Friday to Athens Macedonian News Agency radio "Praktoreio 104.9FM".

    It is a motorway that reduces significantly the distance between Corinth and Kalamata and Sparti and the traffic will be conducted with safety, said Spirtzis adding that his ministry and the government aim in the next two years to proceed in works that exceed 4 bln euros "This is our effort and despite problems with a series of issues we explore new sources of funding.

    [04] 1,200 children migrants and refugees completed first school trimester in Greece

    Over 1,200 children migrants and refugees completed their first trimester in school, according to the International Migration Organisation (IMO).

    IMO said that 35 school buses transfer every day children from 13 hosting centers throughout the country to the closest schools.

    The schools opened their doors to children migrants and refugees that stay in hosting centers on October 10 and the organisation safeguards the children's' transport from the centers to the schools and provides them with school bags, pens and pencils and notebooks. The programme is financed by EU extraordinary mechanism and is part of the broader project "Assistance and protection to migrants and refugees stranded in Greece".

    According to Greek Education Ministry's planning, 400 additional children refugees and migrants will go to school in January after the end of Christmas holidays.
