  • [01] PM Tsipras to brief opposition leaders on Cyprus talks on Monday

    Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will meet with opposition party leaders on Monday, to discuss developments on the Cyprus issue, ahead of the meeting between Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in Geneva on January 12.

    Īn Tuesday Tsipras will meet with Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos to discuss the Cyprus issue. The meeting will take place at 13.00, at the Presidential mansion.

    Monday's meetings schedule is the following:

    -10:00 Kyriakos Mitsotakis (ND)

    -12:00 Fofi Gennimata (Democratic Coalition)

    -14:00 Dimitris Koutsoumbas (Communist Party)

    -17:00 Stavros Theodorakis (Potami)

    -19:30 Vasilis Leventis (Centrists' Union)

    -20:30 Panos Kammenos (ANEL)

    On Sunday, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had an in-depth discussion with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the telephone, ahead of the multilateral meeting on the Cyprus issue, discussing aspects of both the process and the issue itself.

    According to an announcement from the prime minister's press office, Tsipras repeated Greece's standing positions during their conversation and also Greece's steadfast commitment to the talks for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus issue, on the basis of UN decisions.

    [02] More snow and freezing temperatures forecast on Monday

    More snow and very low temperatures are forecast on Monday, with below freezing temperatures throughout northern Greece. Winds mainly from northerly directions, between 5-8 Beaufort. Temperatures from -12C to -1C in the north, -4C to 5C in the Ionian islands and the west, -5C to 4C in east and central Greece, -1C to 8C on the Aegean islands. Cloudy in Athens with occasional snow and temperatures from -2C to 4C. Clouds and snow in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from -7C to -2C.

    [03] Winter sales to start on Jan. 9; optional opening on following Sunday

    Winter sales will kick off in Athens and Thessaloniki on Monday, January 9, the two cities' Chambers of Commerce said on Tuesday, adding that shop owners may also choose to open on the following Sunday (Jan.15).

    For stores that will open on Jan. 15, the proposed shopping hours are 11:00-18:00. Shops are also required to write the old and new price on all items offered and may also include the percentage of the sale, the Athens Chamber said in a press release. Sales will officially end on February 28.
