[01] Papademos to be admitted to Evangelismos hospital as a precaution

They said that Papademos was able to communicate well with the doctors and had suffered soft-tissue trauma in the chest area, as well as minor burns to the face. He will be admitted to the hospital as a precaution, the same source said, and may undergo some minor surgery if necessary.

Earlier reports said that Papademos had sustained minor injuries to the hands, feet and abdomen and underwent a CT scan as a precaution. His driver and a bodyguard that were in the car with him were reported to have sustained lighter injuries in the blast.

Members of the government, Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras and other political and public figures have gone to Evangelismos to inquire about his condition.

Among them was government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos, who said that Papademos' condition was stable and that he was undergoing all necessary tests.

Tzanakopoulos also expressed the Greek government's unequivocal and categoric condemnation of the terrorist attack.

Papademos, a central banker and ECB vice-president who served as the head of Greece's caretaker government from November 2011 until May 2012, was injured in what authorities suspect was a letter-bomb explosion that occurred while he was driving through downtown Athens in his car.

The same source said his injuries do not appear to be very serious, while the injuries sustained by his driver and one other passenger are even lighter. The explosion occurred while Papademos was riding in a car, on the corner 3rd September Street and Marnis in central Athens.

President Prokopis Pavlopoulos contacted the hospital to be briefed about Papademos and the other passengers' condition. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras who is attending the NATO summit in Brussels has also been informed of the incident.

According to the first reports, the explosion was caused by a booby-trapped envelope that went off while the car was in motion. The initial images indicate that the car suffered major damage. There was also a second car escorting the former premier. Police have cordoned off the area.

Papademos, an economist, led a caretaker government in November 2011 and served until May 2012. He has also served as vice-president of the European Central Bank from 2002 to 2010 and Governor of the Bank of Greece from 1994 to 2002.
