Siemens case is now in the epicentre of wrangling that broke out in todays debate in Parliament on political party leaders level. Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis criticized harshly PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement), accusing it of demagogy and distortion of truth. He also reported that a bi-party committee would be set up to examine party functioning and financing. In reply to PASOK President George Papandreous request on the setting up of an inquiry committee, he stressed that it will be set when Justice concludes its work. Mr Papandreou accused the PM and the government of an attempt to whitewash corruption.

Inquiry Committee to be Set up after Justice Concludes its Work

The prime minister stated that an inquiry committee would be set up after Justice concludes its work. In parallel, he invited all parties to set up a bi-party committee that it would boost transparency on issues related to the functioning of parties, expences and their financing. Mr. Karamanlis exercised severe criticism to all opposition parties who voted against all laws regarding transparency and undermined the legal shield of political parties and transparency through the revision of Constitution. As Mr. Karamanlis said he submitted a series of suggestions which can be turned into a "constitutional cheque". But this was never put into effect due to the negative stance adopted by the opposition party, he added. In addition, Mr. Karamanlis stated that he is open in every fertile suggestion: "I ask for once again from everyone to proceed along with the government. If there is denial again, the governmental majority is ready, is determined to proceed. This is my decision; not to allow anyone to create shadows in the political world to shift responsibilities and to exercise polices of misinforming. Mr. Karamanlis branded Mr. Papandreous demand for a set up on an enquiry committee hypocritical because as he has already said this was his initiative and commitment since February. Mr. Karamanlis confirmed that the judicial investigation on Siemens will proceed and will be completed.

Referring earlier to the high cost of living, the PM spoke of the rapid rise of prices worldwide, a development that also affects Greece. Mr Karamanlis spoke of besetting pathogenesis in the Greek market that manifests even more during difficult times. He also pointed out that the most serious problems for the Greek economy are unemployment and the high cost of living because they are affecting disproportionally the socially weak.

He added that the above problems need time to be dealt with, as they are deeply rooted. Besides, he attributed the rising prices to the high oil prices. He stressed that the measures to be taken should not affect development and lead to fiscal derailment, appealing in parallel to the citizens help in that effort. Furthermore, he referred to the reforms promoted by the government, adding that they armour the economy to a great extent.

Papandreou: "Ready to Clash"

PASOK president branded the Prime Ministers speech an "essay expressing opinions, a testimony and an excuse for his failure", attributing to the government responsibilities regarding the high cost of living and corruption. Mr. Giorgos Papandreou said that Costas Karamanlis lost the battle against corruption and manipulation of political view by big interests although he had promised to PASOK support in this issue. Today, "we saw his effort to avoid and postpone the adoption of suggestions submitted by PASOK regarding transparency". "I have never disputed your integrity, he stressed. But you are being judged for your courage to undertake your responsibilities to the Greek people. We have already heard about promises that justice will investigate scandals such as kidnappings, wire tapings, OTE buy out by Germans and structured bonds. May be you can not clash because behind all these scandals illegal political party money is hiding. Are you ready to confirm that the circle of lost investors, the same people in 1999, and the same people involved in structured bonds, have nothing to do with New Democracy" Mr. Papandreou said and continued: "I am ready to clash with mentalities and practices which block Greece from developing".

Papariga: "Monopolies and Businesses Buy Out People"

KKE general secretary Mrs. Aleka Papariga stated that she is favoring the set up of an enquiry committee on Siemens case before justice completes its work. "Because truth does not always come through justice, KKE believes that it has to go through Parliament" she said and added that "everyone has the obligation to respond to it and not to conceal the ground where all these take place". As per corruption issues Mrs. Papariga said that KKE is focusing on "the legal and illegal corruption and what is obvious is the war between monopolies and businesses which buy out people so as to contribute to agreements of state contracts".

Alavanos: "Decay is Drifting Innocents along with Offenders"

SYRIZA parliamentary group president Mr. Alekos Alavanos also asked for the setting up of an enquiry committee. On reference to Siemens case, Mr. Alavanos spoke of "annulment and decay of the political system which prevails and drifts defenders along with innocent people."The European Union is laughing at us and if we do not do something now the whole world will face us with quite distrust", he said. Mr Alavanos also added that the two big political parties of Greece are both involved in scandals of corruption; the Greek people are listening to various scenarios regarding their political representatives while Mass Media state that they have information about people and things but without presenting evidence".
