The crisis in the breakaway province of South Ossetia is deepening, as fierce fighting between the Russian and Georgian forces continues. Death toll has exceeded 1,700. The signs of humanitarian disaster in the area are more than apparent, since drinking water reservoirs, petrol stations and the citys only hospital have been badly damaged, while more than 30,000 refugees have fled South Ossetia, argued the Vice-President of the Russian administration. On Friday, there was no breakthrough at the sitting of the UNs Security Council, while a new one has been scheduled for Saturday. The Red Cross dismissed the situation as frustrating. A 15-day military rule was declared in Georgia, while Russia announced its intentions to have its troops beefed up to protect the people of South Ossetia. It shelled late on Friday the Georgian port of Poti and a military base. Russian media said that President Dmitry Medvedev described the situation as a humanitarian destruction, arguing that those held accountable should pay the price. At the same time, Georgias state-run television reported that the Russian pounding against the city of Gori claimed the lives of several civilians and leveled houses. Besides, an Abkhazian official stressed that Russian jets shelled a controversial territory between Georgia and the breakaway province of Abkhazia.
