[01] GREECE WINS GOLD MEDAL IN SEVILLE
Greek successes continue in the 7th international field and track
championship in Seville, with Voula Tsiamita winning the gold medal in
the triple jump with 14 metres and 88 cm. and Olga Basdeki winning the
bronze medal with 14 metres and 61cm.
[02] GREEK PREMIER C.SIMITIS SIGNS PROTOCOLS IN ALBANIA
The Greek Prime minister Costas Simitis, who is paying an official
visit to Tirana, stated yesterday after his meeting with the Albanian
President Redjep Meidani and his Albanian counterpart Pandeli Maiko
that Greece was against any change in the borders in the Balkans and
against the creation of new states in former Yugoslavia.
The two Prime ministers signed two protocols of bilateral cooperation
between Greece and Albania. The first protocol concerns the two
countries' economic cooperation and the second one concerns the
establishment of a border guardpost and the combat of smuggling.
In the meantime, opposition New Democracy party spokesman described Mr.
Simitis' visit to Albania as a pre-electoral trick, adding that his
visit there was not well prepared, stressing that the results of the
discussions regarding issues of the Greek minority should have been
more specific and binding for the Albanian side.
[03] EARTHQUAKE HITS AIGION
An earthquake measuring 4,5 on the Richter scale took place just after
2300 hours Greek time at the area of Aigion yesterday. No damages have
been reported.
[04] GOVERNMENT CADRES MEET TO DECIDE ON THE NEW STATE BUDGET
The meeting of the Greek government's economic cadres scheduled to be
presided by the Greek Premier Costas Simitis today, will examine issues
related to the new state budget for the year 2000, inflation and tax
reductions.
[05] OPENING OF SESSIONS OF THE SIXTH COUNCIL OF EPIROTES
The Greek President Costantinos Stephanopoulos will declare open the
sessions of the sixth World Council of Epirotes at Perdika at the
prefecture of Thesprotia tomorrow.
[06] APPOINTMENT OF NEW MINISTERS IN CYPRUS
The President of the Cyprus Republic appointed three new ministers
yesterday. Specifically, Mr. Socratis Chasikos was appointed Defence
minister, Mr.Averof Neophytou Minister of Transport and Public Works
and Mr. Frixos Savvides Health minister. Mr. Michalis Papapetrou will
be the new government representative.
[07] THE AMERICAN CONGRESS DENOUNCES TURKISH INTRANSIGENCE
Following their meeting with the President of the Cyprus Republic
Glafkos Klerides in Nicosia yesterday, two American deputies stated
that the American congress described Ankara's and Turkish-cypriot
representative Raouf Denktash's intransigence as unacceptable. The two
deputies pointed out that the time had come for promoting the
resolution of the Cyprus issue, a development which would re-unite the
island of Cyprus on the basis of a Federal system.
[08] GREEK CANDIDATES RUN FOR A SEAT IN THE PARLIAMENT OF VICTORIA
Several ethnic Greeks living in Australia will run as candidates for a
seat in the Parliament of the state of Victoria. It should be noted
that the majority of Greeks live in Victoria and especially in
Melbourne.
[09] SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY INTENDS TO OPEN ITS DEPARTMENT IN CRETE
The Australian Technical University of Swinburne has anounced that it
intends to open its department at the University of Crete. According to
statements of the University's official, this will be the first time an
Australian University opens its department in Greece. The Australians
believe that due to the prevailing enthusiasm and great interest, the
University's department will function by 2001.
[10] GREEK WORKERS' UNIONS MEET WITH THE GREEK PREMIER
The General Confederation of Greek Workers and the Public Workers'
Union will present today the Prime minister Costas Simitis with demands
related to financial and labor issues, the establishment of the 35hr
week, support measures for the unemployed and low income earners as
well as rises in the public sector.
[11] INTEREST RATES REMAIN STABLE
Following his meeting with the National Economy minister Yiannos
Papantoniou yesterday, the Governor of the Bank of Greece Lukas
Papadimos pointed out that interest rates would remain at the present
levels until inflation stabized at 2%.
[12] SLIGHT DROP OF THE GENERAL PRICE INDEX YESTERDAY
The general share price index on the Athens Stock Exchange fell
slightly yesterday, closing 0.2% down at 5,056.49 points.
[13] WEATHER FORCAST
The National Meteorological Service forcasts for today a new slight
drop of temperatures in Greece with gustly winds blowing in the Aegean
sea, scattered showers and thunderstorms in Thessaly, the eastern
mainland and the Peloponnese. The temperature in Athens will vary from
20 to 30 degrees Centigrate and in Thessaloniki from 18 to 26 degrees.
