  • [01] GREEK NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATED YESTERDAÕ

Celebrations marking the October 28th Greek national day ended yesterday with a military parade in Thessaloniki. Taking the salute was president of the republic Kostis Stefanopoulos. In Athens, a student parade was attended by minister of education Gerasimos Arsenis. In a message to mark the day, president Stefanopoulos emphasized the need for parents and teachers to instill national ideals in the youth of today. Prime minister Kostas Simitis recalled the heroic deeds of the 1940 war, while defence minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos gave assurances that Greeks should not worry about the country's security. For the first time, "Patriot" defence missiles were shown at the military parade. Opposition New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis referred to national and spiritual unity, while minister for Macedonia and Thrace Yannis Mangriotis underlined that the presence of young people was a guarantee for tomorrow.

[02] GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER HOLDS TALKS WITH GERMAN COUNTERPART

Foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou is currently in Berlin for talks with his German counterpart Joschka Fischer on bilateral issues and on Euro-Turkish and Greek-Turkish relations. Today, the talks will focus on relations between the EU and Turkey in view of the Helsinki summit. Mr Fischer is backing Turkey's candidacy for admission to the EU. In the meantime, British prime minister Tony Blair has reiterated that Cyprus' admission to the EU does not depend on a solution to the Cyprus dispute. He also said that his country backed the candidacy of Turkey for admission to the EU, clarifying that Ankara should not benefit from favorable treatment, but not suffer any discrimination either.

[03] CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN PRAISES US EFFORTS

Cypriot government spokesman Michalis Papapetrou expressed the conviction that the US was sincere in its attempt to resolve the Cyprus issue and was truly seeking to break the deadlock and bring the two sides to the negotiating table. Mr Papapetrou underlined as an important event the upgrading of the Cyprus issue in American diplomatic priorities, citing as an example the visit by US president Bill Clinton to Athens and Ankara, with the Cyprus issue topping his agenda.

[04] TECHNICAL CHAMBER OBJECTS TO AMENDED STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS

Chairman of the Technical Chamber of Greece Kostas Liaskas has expressed his radical disagreement with the intention of the ministry of justice to amend the penal code so as to extend indefinitely the statutory limitation of offences made by civil engineers. Environment, planning and public works minister Kostas Laliotis said the Technical Chamber should not undermine its role as an institution by giving in to short-lived sectional interests.

[05] PAY DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN UPHELD BY EUROPEAN COURT

Greece may have to pay salaries and pensions retrospectively to women, amounting to huge sums, following yesterday's ruling by the European Court, according to which Greek legislation was discriminating against working women as regards salaries. The statute of limitations provided for by Greek legislation may not stand up in court, while the Greek government will not be able to invoke economic or administrative obstacles in order to avoid implementing the EU directives.

[06] PREHISTORIC LAKE SETTLEMENT REPLICA INAUGURATED AT DISPILIO

Greek president Kostis Stefanopoulos is inaugurating in Dispilio, Kastoria, today, a museum recreating a prehistoric lake settlement. Professor of prehistoric archaeology of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki Giorgos Hourmouziadis has undertaken excavations in the area and set up the settlement.

[07] MACEDONIAN COIN FOUND IN TURKEY

A gold coin dating back to the era of Alexander the Great has been found at Alikarnassos, Turkey, during works by a Turkish mobile phone company. The curator of the museum of Alikarnassos has said that the coin must have arrived there during the Macedonian king's military campaign in 336 BC. The coin weighs 8.6 grams and features Athena on one side and the name of Alexander the Great in Greek on the other.
