Addressing the union of Turkish businessmen in Constantinople yesterday, the American president, Bill Clinton, said the improvement in Greek-Turkish relations would have a beneficial effect on Turkey's candidacy for entry to the European Union. He underlined that the solidarity manifested between the two peoples after the recent earthquakes in both countries and the forthcoming reopening of the Cyprus talks in New York offered a unique opportunity which if properly exploited would bring huge political and economic benefits to the people of Turkey.

He is expected to make statements shortly before his departure. On the sidelines of the summit he will meet with the prime ministers of Luxembourg, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark and Turkey. The government spokesman, Dimitris Reppas, said there was no fixed agenda for tomorrow's talks between Mr Simitis and his Turkish counterpart, Bulent Ecevit, but that they would certainly discuss Greek-Turkish relations. He also reiterated there was no question of a tripartite meeting between prime minister Simitis, president Clinton and prime minister Ecevit.
