    [01] Greek and Turkish foreign ministers meet with their American counterpart in NY

    Greek foreign minister George Papandreou and Turkish foreign minister Ismail Jem meet with their american counterpart Madleen Albright in NY. Greek-Turkish relations,the Cyprus issue and the situation in the Balcans will be the focus of their talks. In the meantime, Mr.Papandreou and Mr.Jem had a first informal meeting at a hotel in Manhattan yesterday.The Greek and Turkish foreign ministers contacts are of special importance in view of the third round of proximity talks which will begin on May 23rd, in NY.

    According to the Turkish press Washinghton appears determined to promote the two sides reapproachment in an effort to resolve their differences. In a separate development, the "political personality of the year" award will be presented to the Greek foreign minister and his Turkish counterpart for their contribution to the improvement of Greek- Turkish relations by the East West Institute at a special ceremony due to take place in NY today. At the same event, the Greek and Turkish emergency teams will also receive special awards for the assistance they offered to each other's countries during last year's massive earthquakes in Greece and Turkey.

    [02] Portuguese foreign minister arrived in Cyprus

    The foreign minister of Portugal and president of the EU's foreign ministers council, Haime Gama arrived in Cyprus. Mr.Gama will have talks with his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kassoulidis and the head of the Cyprus-EU negotiations team Giorgos Vasiliou. He will also be received by president Klerides. Mr.Gama visit to Cyprys signals the opening of a series of diplomatic visits in view of the third round of proximity talks in NY.After Mr.Gama, the special advisor of the UN secretary genral Alvaro de Soto and the American presidential envoy on the Cyprus issue David Hanney are expected to visit Cyprus.

    [03] American State Department report, critical about the way Greece deals with terrorism

    In reply to the American State Department annual report which criticises the way Greece deals with terrorism, Greek goverment spokesman Dimitris Reppas said that Greece is in the front line and actively participates in all international efforts linked with the combat of terrorism. As Mr.Reppas stressed, the US appears to ignore Greece's cooperatio and coordinate activities with the US and other countries as well as its initiatives within the framework of the UN, the EU, the Council of Europe and other international organisations.

    [04] A Greek bus attacked in Kossovo

    A Greek army bus carrying relatives of Greek soldiers stationing in Kossovo was attacked most possibly by albanian speaking Kossovars 65 km west of Pristina. None of the passengers was injured.

    [05] Labour unions in Greece celebrate May 1st anniversary from May 7-9

    Greek labour unions will celebrate May 1st, Labour Day with separate events starting May 7 to 10. In their messages,the archibishop of Athens Hristodoulos and political parties underlined the meaning of the May 1st anniversary in the present era. In the rest of the world, workers celebrated May 1st but in some cases it ended in violent incidents. In Indonisia, 2 demonstrators were killed and tens injured by police fire. Some incidents also occured in demonstrations in London, Ambourg, Berlin and Gdansk.

    [06] Bloody Easter exodus

    Despite strict measures by the traffic police, 40 people lost their lives and 450 were injured in 294 road accidents during this year's mass exodus for the Easter Holiday.

    [07] Acclaimed Greek film director, Vasilis Georgiadis died on Easter Sunday

    The world of the arts in Greece has been saddened by the news of the death of acclaimed Greek film director Vasilis Georgiadis, who died of a heart attack at the age of 79 on Easter Sunday. The funeral service for the man who directed dozens of black and white films, will take place at the Athens First Cemetery tomorrow. Vasilis Georgiadis will be buried in his native town, Xylokastro.
