[01] Samina Express sank off Paros ,42 passengers dead
Greece mourns the sea tragedy of the passenger ship "Samina Express"
,which crashed on the rocky islet Portes off the island of Paros last
night. 42 passengers dead is the tragic toll so far ,while efforts to
locate any possible survivors continue despite the bad weather
conditions. Over 440 of the 526 passengers on board the Samina Express
have been rescued. Among the dead is the deputy harbour - master,
Dimitris Malamas, who died of a heart failure during the rscue
operation. The Greek Navy torpedo boat "Themistoklis" which first
arrived at the site of the tragedy, is coordinating rescue efforts with
the assistance of the British aircraft- carrier Invisible and the
British fregate Liverpool. Seven people ,have been transferred to the
"Evagelismos Hospital in Athens from the Health Center in Paros. Their
names are Stavroula Milona, Theodoros and Paraskevi Tzemos Steeven and
Monica Richard ,Vasiliki Manoli ,and Ioulieta Roda . The Olympic
Airways Company has scheduled two flights to the island of Paros. All
interested can call 96.66.666. The Merchant Marine ministry calls all
inhabitants of Paros who travelled on the Samina Express to go to the
Health Center in order to record the number of survivors. The Express
Samina was 34 years oldand according to the marine regulations it would
stop sailing in 2001. Merchant Marine minister Hristos Papoutsis is in
the island of Paros. Greek president Kostis Stefanopoulos and prime-
minister Kostas Simitis expressed their grief at the tragic accident.
Prime minister Kostas Simitis has ordered the Supreme Court prosecutor
to conduct an investigation on the causes of the sea accident. Justice
minister Mihalis Stathopoulos told Mr.Simitis that law-suits -without
any preliminary interrogation-would be filed against the shipping
company and the senior staff of the ship .
[02] National Economy minister promised 5% pace of development in 2001 at
the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meeting in Prague
In his speech ,at the session of the International Monetary Fund and
World Bank meeting taking place in Prague ,Greek National Economy
minister Yiannos Papantoniou called the international community to
coordinate efforts so that oil- production countries increase world
production of oil. Mr.Papantoniou said that structural changes in the
telecommunications and energy sector would be completed in 2001, adding
that the pace of development would be around 5% in 2001. Most of the
speakers referred to the combat of poverty and the demograpgic problem
as top priority problems while there was limited referrence to the Euro
currency and the oil crisis .
[03] In Prague, 420 demonstrators arrested
Chech Interior minister Stanislav Gross announced today that about 420
people -among them 130 foreigners were arrested yesterday in Prague
where the annual meeting of the International Monetray Fund and World
Bank is being held. The demontrators were protesting against
globalisation Mr.Gross said that over 100 policemen were injured during
clashes with demonstrators.
[04] Oil will drop to 25 dollars per barrel ,analysts believe
Oil price rose slightly yesterday one day before the summit meeting of
the OPEC countries. International analysts believe that the price of
crude oil will drop to 25 US dollars per barrel before the end of the
year.
[05] Shortage of fuel in Greece due to strike mobilisations
The first signs of the strike of tank-truck drivers are apparent in the
market. There is already shortage of unleaded petrol in many petrol
stations, while motorists are queing to fill up their car tanks.
Meanwhile, the members of the federation of public utility vehicles and
truck owners entered into the strike mobilisations at midnight on
Tuesday while taxi owners will follow suit on Friday demanding a rise
in taxi fares.
[06] Cypriot president satisfied at the outcome of the 4th round of talks
Cypriot president Glafkos Klerides had a 40 minute meeting with the UN
Sec General Kofi Anan this morning. In repply to reporters' questions,
immediately after the meeting Mr.Klerides said he was satisfied at the
outcome of the fourth round of proximity talks which he described as
very useful not because of the proposals but due to the ideas aimed to
evaluate the reactions of both the Greek- Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot
sides.
From his part ,after his meeting with the UN General Secretary Kofi
Annan ,the Turkish -Cypriot representative Raulf Dektash said that the
next round of talks would begin on November 1st ,in Geneva adding that
Mr. de Soto would make the announcement.
Mr.Dektash said that this round of talks was not a waste of time. He
underlined that there was better understanding of their firm positions
so they would continue efforts to bridge the gap.
[07] Efforts to defuse tension within the Pasok party
Efforts are being made to defuse tension within the Pasok party
following Culture minister Theodoros Pangalos allegations about close
friendly relations between senior members of the Pasok party with
businessmen. The pasok party Executive Office convenes tomorrow while
Mr.pangalos will attend the meeting to give explanations.
Prime-minister Simitis met with the pasok party general secretary
Kostas Skandalidis yesterday.
[08] Greece-Fyrom cooperation in the energy sector
During Development minister Nikos Christodoulakis' official visit to
Skopie yesterday the two sides examined the prospects of cooperation
between Greece and the Former Yiougoslav Republic of Macedonia mainly
in the sector of energy.
[09] Panathinaikos beat Hambourg 1-0
Within the framework of the matches of Champions league, Panathinaikos
football team beat Hamburgh 1-0 increasing its chancess for a first or
second position in this group. Yirgos Nasiopoulos scored the goal in
the firs half.
[10] Latin America supports Miky Theodoraky's candidacy for the Nobel Prize
Under the initiative of Ethnic greek Stratos Doukakis, who lives in
Venezuela, 1300 signatures of personalities living in Latin America
were collected in support of famous Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis 's
candidancy for the Nobel prize.
Many latin american authors, musicians, poets and other personalities
with the help of events support Mr.Theodorakis' candidancy. Mr.
Doukaikis' aim was to collect 1013 signatures, as a symbolic number
based on the title of one of the composer's songs.
Finally, 1350 signatures were collected. Among those who signed were
Vernando Reies, Pablo Nerunda's grandson.
