    [01] Papandreou's statements about Yugoslavia

    Delivering a speech yesterday at the Parliamentary Foreign and Defence committee, Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou stated that the latest developments in Yugoslavia justified the Greek governmnent's policy there and referred to the important political and economic prospects available now to Greece in the Balkans.

    Mr. Papandreou anounced that the negotiations regarding Kossovo would begin soon, expressing the hope that the Yugoslav integrity would be maintained.

    Earlier, Mr. Papandreou had a meeting with Prime minister Costas Simitis in view of the extraordinary Summit meeting in Biaritz, France on Friday and Saturday.

    According to the Greek Foreign minister, the issues to be discussed during the summit meeting will be related to the Middle East the situation in the Balkans and especially the latest developments in Yugoslavia, as well as the changes in the Amsterdam Treaty.

    Mr. Papandreou stated that despite the fact that the Yugoslav President Voislav Kostunica had been invited at the 15 European Union leaders' banquet, it was not certain whether he would be present. He also added that the latest developments in Yugoslavia boosted its European course, while a connection and stability pact would be promoted with the European Union next, with the possibility of Yugoslavia's becoming a European Union candidate country.

    [02] Stephanopoulos in Latvia

    President Costis Stephanopoulos, who is paying an official visit to Latvia, expresed the wish yesterday that everything would turn well for Yugoslavia and that that country would join the European family. It should be noted that during the banquet hosted by the President of Latvia, Mr. Stephanopoulos referred to Greece's role in the Balkans, stressing that Greece would continue to warn about the great dangers that would cause any change in the borders of the region.

    Finally, the Greek President visited the Riga Town Hall and then met with the Latvian Prime minister. The French Foreign minister Hubert Ventrin, who is visiting Belgrade, stated that the Europeans' priority was the consolidation of democracy in Yugoslavia and not Slobodan Milocevic' committing to trial.

    At the same time, American President Bill Clinton's special advisor for the Balkans will visit Belgrade this week to ask for the lifting of the sanctions against Yugoslavia and ask for the country's return to the International Community.

    [03] 2004 Olympics

    The Executive Manager of the International Olympics Committee Jacques Rogue asked yesterday for the creation of an Olympic Games ministry and appealed for peace between the Greek government and the organizational committee for the "2004 Olympics".

    The Greek government replied by saying that such a thing was incompatible to the Greek political tradition, while Mr. Rogue pointed out that the International Olympics Committee was ready to accept some other settlement.

    From his side, the Greek Culture minister Theodoros Pangalos who is visiting Cyprus stated that Mrs. Angelopoulou-Daskalaki had interveened dynamically to the course for the preparation of the Olympic Games, adding that a very big progress had been made since March, something that would become evident to the International Olympics Committee in November when it would visit Greece.

    [04] Officials to arrive in Cyprus before Cyprus proximity talks

    American specialists on the Cyrpus issue are expected to visit Cyrpus next week in order to have contacts there before the third round of the Cyprus proximity talks.

    Presidential envoy Alfred Moses and special coordinator on the Cyprus issue in the State Department Thomas Weston are expected to arrive in Nicosia next Monday.

    United Nations Secretary General's special advisor Alvaro de Soto is expected to visit Cyprus for the same reason. Mr. Soto will stay in Cyprus for five days and will meet with the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides and the Turkish-Cypriot representative Raouf Denktash.

    [05] ''Express Samina'' investigation continues

    A roll call vote for the amendment of the Justice ministry which proposes the fast trial of special cases similar to that of "Express Samina" will take place in Parliament this afternoon, following a relevant request by the main opposition New Democracy party, which is accusing the government of trying to impress.

    In the meantime, the special judge of court of appeal Nikos Papadimitriou intends to carry out an autopsy at the area where "Express Samina" sank when the weather conditions improve.

    Finally, the prelimenary examination continues and about 200 people have been called to testify in Syros and other local courts of inquiry.

    [06] New Democracy asks for the formation of Examining Committee

    New Democracy party's request, signed by all its deputies and related to the formation of an Examining Committee regarding Mr. Doyiakos' report about the appointment of Mr. Stavros Psycharis as political manager of Mount Athos and deals between the Public services and the travel agency "Travel Plan" will be tabled to Parliament within the next days.

    The anouncment was made by the party's President Costas Karamanlis during his address to the New Democracy Parliamentary Group which met yesterday. Mr. Karamanlis accused the goverment of corruption.

    [07] Mikis Theodorakis candidate for Nobel Peace Prize

    According to the French news agency, famous Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis is among the candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000, that will be awarded in Oslo next Friday.

    The list of candidates includes 21 personages, International Organisations, Bodies and cities.

    [08] N. Burns inaugurates the ''Centre of Athens''

    American ambassador to Athens Nicolas Burns inaugurated the Centre of Athens and the Athenian branch of the American Institution for the Greek language and Culture at Zappeion mansion yesterday. Present were Interior minister Vaso Papandreou and Education minister Petros Efthymiou.

    [09] 0,84% drop in the Athens Stock Exchange yesterday

    The General Share Price Index of the Athens Stock Exchange fell yesterday by 0,84%, closing at 3923,17 points.

    [10] New tax draft-bill

    National Economy minister Yiannos Papantoniou has stated that according to the new tax draft bill, which will be tabled at Parliament next week yearly incomes below 2.400.000 drachmas will not be taxed, while the decision for an extraordinary allowance to low incomes and pensioners will low pensions, due to the rise of the price of petrol will be taken at the end of the month.

    [11] Chief of Staff of the Air Force Lytzerakos visits the USA

    The Chief of Staff of the Air Force Air Marchal Dimitris Lytzerakos, who is paying an official visit to the United States, met with his American counterpart admiral Michael Ryan and deputy commander admiral Myers.

    Additionally, he visited the installations of "Boeing" and "Lockheed", where the new jet fighter "Joint Strike" is being manufactured and which Greece is interested in buying.

    Mr. Lytzerakos will tour other air bases in Virginia, South Carolina, Florida and Texas and will leave from the United States on Saturday.
