Greece is not endangering its national interests through its policy in relation to Turkey, Foreign minister Yorgos Papandreou stressed in an interview published yesterday in the Sunday newspaper "Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia". Mr. Papandreou added he was determined to personally undertake the responsibility of Greece's policy towards Ankara. At the same time, the Foreign minister clarified that although the major issues in the two countries' bilateral relations remained unresolved, dialogue should continue, at least on matters of common interest. In the meantime, during his three day tour in the Peloponese, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis yesterday said that foreign policy was a national issue and reiterated his proposal for consent and defining of a national strategy. In the meantime, Turkish deputy Prime minister, Mesut Yilmaz, yesterday called on Greece not to use the EU as a "shield" for the settlement of its differences with Ankara in the Cyprus issue. Mr. Yilmaz, who is responsible for his country's relations with the European Union, also reminded the European Union's programme regarding Turkey's accession to the Union, reminding Turkey's difficult course towards its goal. He added that Turkey was determined to implement its "national programme" in December, explaining that that programme would be the answer to the European one. He also said that the programme would be presenting Turkey's priorities.

In the meantime, during yesterday's summit meeting of Islamic countries held in Doha, Katar, Turkish-Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash's position regarding a solution of the Cyprus issue based on a Confederation, was hailed by the participants. Greece was also critisized for its stance against the Muslims living in Thrace. However, according to information, Algeria will table a letter that will be stressing that the references in the resolution constitute a violation of Cyprus's domination. Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and Tunis are expected to express their reserve. Finally, no respond is expected if Ankara materializes its threat for raising the issue of the recognition of Denktash's pseudostate.
