THE VOICE OF GREECE 4/12/2000 2:24:25 μμ [01] Turkey's partnership relationship with the EU discussed todayTurkey's partnership relationship with the EU is to be discussed in Brusels today at the meeting of the 15 member states' Foreign ministers, in view of the summit due to be held in Nice next week.The French Presidency is expected to present a comprimising proposal. However, Greek Foreign ministry circles are pointing out that Athens will not accept an agreement on Turkey's partnership relationship with the Europeand Union if the text regarding the agreement does not present clearly the references made on the Cyprus issue and Greek-Turkish relations during the Helsinki summit. [02] Soto visits CyprusUpon his arrival in Larnaka yesterday, special UN mediator for the Cyprus issue, Alvaro de Sotto, reiterated UN Secretary General Kofi Anan's invitation to the 6th round of the Cyprus proximity talks in Geneva in January.Mr. de Soto stated that there was plenty of time left, and a response from Mr. Kliridis and Mr. Denktash was not expected immediately. Referring to his visit to Cyprus he said that he wished to be briefed on the two sides' views and to have substancial discussions with them if they wished. From his side the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides made it clear during an anti-occupation event at Mia Milia barricade that any solution of the Cyprus issue should be based on the Security Council resolutions. As he said a federal, demilitarized and European Union country-member could be able to restore justice on a commonly accepted basis. In the meantime, Turkish-Cypriot representative, Rauf Denktash said that the decision to withdraw from the proximity talks aimed at preventing any deviation from the "two countries' " principle. It should be noted that the Turkish occupation forces have upraded their positions in Ayios Dometions area constructing new fortifications. Sources of the Security Authorities of the Cyprus Republic reported that Cyprus had remonstrated against the new developments to the United Nations accusing Turkey that it violated the status quo in the area. [03] EU Agriculture ministers to take measures for mad cow diseaseThe EU agriculture ministers are to meet in Brussels today in order to finalize the measures to be taken in order to face to mad cow disease. The Greek delegation will propose the banning on selling cattle entrails and all types of meat-flour for a year, as well as the implementation of a tracking test on all cattle as of July 1st 2001.[04] Government reshuffle ruled outGovernment circles have ruled out the possibility of a government reshuffle which was ignited after an interview of National Economy minister Yannos Papantoniou published in the Sunday newspaper "Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia", in which he had said that his circle of work had been completed at the National Economy ministry.The same circles stressed the important role Mr. Yiannos Papantoniou had played in Greece' course to the European Monetary Union, adding that he had tabled the first surplus inflation. [05] Cabinet meets tomorrow to discuss about economy etcA cabinet meeting will be held tomorrow to examine the course of the economy as well as the repurcussions from the rise of the price of petrol and the US dollar. It is also possible that measures may be taken to boost the Athens Stock Exchange.[06] Papadimos recommends speeding up of reforms in economyIn an interview published in the Sunday newspaper " Kathimerini Tis Kyriakis", the Governor of the Bank of Greece, Loukas Papadimos recommends the speeding up of reforms in the economy, referring to privatizations, tax reduction, and cutting funds to public enterprises.[07] Minoan Flying Dolphins' Board of Directors meets tomorrowPrelimenary inquiries regarding the suicide of Pantelis Sfinias, Vice President of MFD, continue. Tomorrow, the company's Board of Directors will meet to decide on the comany's future and to decide who the new Vice President will be.In the meantime, it has been reported that the President of the Minoan Lines Kostas Klirinomos had given a 16 page long letter to Mr. Shinias on Monday morning and that bussinesman Philipos Vryonis, who owns 11,3% of MFD, questioned Mr. Sfinias' role. Shipowner Gerasimos Agoudimos, Mr. Sfinias' lawyer Anastasia Staikoy and expert on "Express Samina" were called on to testify. Finally, Merchant Marine minister Christos Papoutsis has ordered a sworn administrative examination for the delayed briefing of the ministry's competent authorities on the dissapearance of the 23 year old electrician of the ship "Minoan Pallas" Yiorgos Kabouris while sailing at the area of Santa Margarita, Italy from November 12 to 14. [08] Kostounitsa in GreeceYugoslav President Voislav Kostounitsa, who is accompanied by the Serb Prime minister Zoran Zizic, is paying a two-day offical visit to Greece from yesterday. Mr. Kostunitsa visited the Serb monastery of Hilandariou at Mount Athos yesterday and today will meet with Macedonia- Thrace minister Yiorgos Paschalides.[09] Tsochatzopoulos pays official visit to SwedenDefence minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos is on an official visit to Sweden, at the invitation of his Swedish counterpart. Mr. Tsohatzopoulos addressed a meeting of expatriates in Stockholm yesterday, while on Saturday he had addressed a conference of the European Socialist party. Today, the minister will hold formal talks with his Swedish counterpart.[10] Skandalides meets with Political Spring party membersThe Secretary General of PASOK's Central Committee Kostas Skandalidis yesterday met with Political Spring party members who had supported PASOK during the last elections.In his speech Mr. Skandalidis said that political facts have changed and if PASOK wanted to remain at the very center of the political life, it should insist on its philosophy of "continuation, renewal, expansion". [11] Tsovolas re-elected President of his partyDimitris Tsovolas was re-elected President of Democratic Social Movement at a conference of the party which was completed in Athens yesterday.
