Besides, government spokesman Dimitris Reppas stated that Prime minister Costas Simitis' visit to Indian will take place according to plan. [02] Bad weather wave expected in GreeceA strong bad weather wave coming from the West, with rain, thunderstorms and gale force South winds is expected today, Tuesday, as forecast by the National Meteorological Service.Due to the intensity of the expected bad weather wave, the General Secretariat for the Protection of Civilians recommends extra care. From its side the state is on the alert. [03] 5,5% rise in low pensionsThe government's pre-election commitment to rise the lowest pensions of the Social Security Fund to 152.000 drachmas is being materialized. A 5,5% raise in low pensions of all Insurance Funds is provided for by yesterday's circular issued by the National Economy ministry.[04] Greek average growth rate higher than Europe's says PapantoniouIn the past five years, the growth rate of the Greek economy has been higher than the average growth rate in the European Union, said National Economy minister Yannos Papantoniou from Ioannina yesterday, forecasting a further growth.Mr. Papantoniou made special reference to the Third Community Support Framework, stressing that it constituted the growth tool aiming at the achievement of a real convergence with the European Union . In the meantime, the National Economy ministry has announced the hiring of thousands of employees in the public sector, with main objective to absorb community programs. [05] Post Office drops interest rates for housing programmesThe Post Office has dropped interest rates of loans used for housing programmes offered to civil servants. Additionally, the amount of the loans has risen, while new loans will be offered from now for the repair of houses.[06] Hospital doctors on a 48-hour strikeHospital doctors have decided to stage a 48 hour strike today and tomorrow, in protest at the new draftbill providing for reforms in the National Health System. At the same time University doctors will abstain from their work for four days.[07] Government reshuffle out of the question says ReppasA government reshuffle is out of the question, government spokesman Dimitris Reppas said yesterday, stressing that "tired" were all those in the opposition who exhausted themselves in unproductive denouncements.It is reminded that the description "tired" was contained in the Prime minister's speech during his tour of the island of Crete and gave rise to numerous scenarios and questions regarding changes in the ministers' cabinet. Mr. Simitis clarified that his statement referred to the New Democracy party. Relevantly, acting government spokesman Tilemachos Hytiris stated that the Prime minister examined his ministers' efficiency on a daily basis and would decided himself who he would replace. [08] Karamanlis and Chrysochoides agree on measures against terrorismA climate of consent prevailed during yesterday's meeting between Public Order minister Michalis Chrysochoidis and New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis, who discussed the issue of terrorism.Mr. Chrysochoidis informed Mr. Karamanlis on the efforts being made in order to combat terrorism, and the legislative initiative to be undertaken by the government. Mr. Karamanlis agreed on the law changes promoted by the government. [12] Albanians arrested for possesion of drugsFour Albanians were arrested yesterday at Kolonos for having eleven kilos of cocaine and four kilos of heroin in their possesion. The drugs were confiscated.[13] Spinal cord of cattle dangerous say European Agriculture ministersThe European Union Agriculture ministers reached to the conclusion that the spinal cord of cattle should be removed and not be sold. The same applies to the meat around the spinal cord.However, the final decision on the issue should have be made by the European Council. [14] The European youth to compete for balanced diet this yearThis year's competition for the New Consumer, supported by Commision, is dealing with nutrition and specifically with a balanced diet.The competition will give the opportunity to all Europeans up to 16 years old to work hard in groups in all European Union countries. The initiative for the competition belongs to a non-governmental organisation called "European Expression" set up in 1989.
