    [01] Escape convict Passaris still free

    As convict Konstantinos Passaris, who escaped after a bloody shootout that cost the lives of two policemen last Friday at the General Hospital, has not been arrested yet, police investigations into every possible direction continue. The funeral of the first victim, policeman Athanasios Drakopoulos was held yesterday in his hometown in Messinia. The funeral of the second victim, Dionysis Alevizopoulos, who passed away yesterday, will be held today. The third wounded police officer, Andreas Fisekis remains hosptalized at a stable condition.

    [02] Two injured in pursuit of Albanian gangsters

    Another bloody incident took place last night in Elefsis when the police set out in pursuit of two Albanian gangsters and the two sides exchanged fire. During the clash, one of the gangsters was seriously injured. A policeman was also slightly injured, while a police car turned over.

    [03] PASOK intraparty elections

    The second round of PASOK intraparty elections was held yesterday, in nine prefectural committees.

    [04] Karamanlis critisizes government of abandoning isolated areas

    New Democracy party leader, Kostas Karamanlis delivered a speech in Konitsa yesterday, on the subject "the problems of Greece's mountain areas".Mr. Karamanlis presented the positions of his party on the economic and socal development of isolated areas, specifying that it was imperative for citizens of those areas to remain in these regons. Mr. Karamanlis also criticised the government for abandoning these areas.

    [05] Samaras proposes the set up of centre-right party

    In an interview with the Synday newspaper "Eleftherotypia tis Kyriakis", the President of the Political Spring party Antonis Samaras said there was a need for a center right party to be set up. He also criticised New Democracy party Honorary president for his allegations that Mr. Samaras was responsible for the fall of the 1993 government.

    [06] Fishermen honored in Paros

    In a solemn ceremony, which took place in Paros yesterday to honor the fishermen who helped in rescuing passengers of Express Samina, a bust of sub-leutenant Dimitris Malamas who had lost his life during the coordination of the operation, was revealed.

    [07] Bill on professional soldiers to be tabled in Parliament within February

    The bill on professional soldiers will be tabled in Parliament within this month, said National Defence minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos yesterday. He also categorically denied rumors that the bill on a shorter military service would be postponed.

    [08] Greek ministers visit to Cyprus

    Minister of Macedonia and Thrace Yorgos Paschalides and minister of the Aegean Nikos Sifounakis yesterday arrived n Cyprus to attend the sessions of the joint committee that will evaluate the "Thrace-Aegean-Cyprus" programme.

    [09] Celebrations for carnival all over Greece

    Celebrations took place n Patras, Moschato, Attica, Thrace and Crete to mark the carnival. Events of the carnival will culminate following Sunday and Monday.
