    [01] Interbalkan Summit Meeting

    The eight leaders of countries of southeastern Europe will meet in Skopje today (Thursday), at a time when the mounting tension in Kosovo threatens their cohesion.

    The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) is organizing the interbalkan summit, for the second time in four months, as it is interested in the new outburst of violence in Kosovo, due to its common borders with the zone where tension prevails and also due to the fact that its population has a large minority of ethnic Albanians.

    National economy undersecretary Ioannis Zafiropoulos who will represent Greece at the summit on the issue of boosting economic cooperation between the countries of the region, is already in Skopje. Prime minister Kostas Simitis who will take part in the summit meeting together with foreign minister George Papandreou will depart for Skopje Thursday afternoon.

    The initiatives and proposals Greece will bring forward at Thursday's Interbalkan summit meeting in Skopje, were the focus of discussion between the prime minister and the foreign minister on Wednesday.

    Immediately after the meeting, Mr Papandreou stated that the summit meeting consisted a unique opportunity for peace and cooperation in the region.

    [02] New evidence on Steven Saunders' assassination

    New evidence came to light on the assassination of the British brigadier Steven Saunders by the terrorist organization ''17 November'' recently.

    Men of the FBI and Scotland Yard are already examining 100 suspicious telephone conversations that were made shortly before and after Steven Saunders' assassination.

    The calls were made by cellular phones near the area where the terrorist attack took place, covering the suburbs Neo Psychiko and Chalandri.

    Meanwhile, justice minister Michalis Stathopoulos will table in a parliament an amendment, according to which the president of the Authority for the Protection of Personal Data will be able - by virtue of his office - to notify third parties about personal data without having to brief the party involved.

    [03] Investigations for radioactive missiles

    The chief of the General Army Staff, lieutenant-general Georgios Antonakopoulos has ordered investigations to be carried out to ascertain whether the ''Milan'' anti-tank missiles in the Greek arsenal contain radioactive material.

    The investigation was ordered following an announcement of the Belgian army that it suspends shooting with missiles of this type, as they contain a radioactive substance.

    [04] Transport minister will visit Canada in March

    Transport and communications minister Alekos Voulgaris will visit Canada from March 3 to 8, and will have contacts with Canadian companies involved with high technology and communications which are interested in investing in Greece.

    As the Athens news agency reports, Mr Voulgaris will also have contacts with the Greek community in Montreal and will visit Greek schools of the community in Montreal and Laval.

    In addition, the Greek minister will have meetings the heads of the Greek community to be briefed on issues pertaining to the Greek-Canadians.

    [05] Investments in energy

    Greek and foreign investors have shown great interest in investing in the construction of electric power plants, following the liberalization of the energy market in Greece.

    Development minister Nikos Christodoulakis announced that more than 920 applications from the private sector have been submitted to the Energy Authority in order to obtain permits for the production of electric power.

    In the next few days, the Authority will examine the proposed investments and will make decisions that will be safeguarding the smooth operation of the market and the consumers' interests.

    [06] Trial for Ocalan

    Twelve people, including the leader of the Kurdish Labour Party Abdulah Ocalan and two Kurdish women who were accompanying him, will face trial in Greece on charges of illegal entry and stay in our country in January 1999.

    [07] PASOK prefectural committee elections

    Greece's high growth rate and the citizen's prosperity are the government's firm goal, said prime minister Kostas Simitis to the newly-elected secretaries of the ruling PASOK party prefectural committees.

    Mr Simitis also pointed out that PASOK - a power of change and renewal - could not rely on the same people and the same ideas and announced that the party's congress will take place in March 2002.

    [08] Plans for interbalkan oil-pipe

    Bulgaria Russia and Greece agreed to carry out a study on the plans for the construction of an inter-balkan oil pipe, estimated to cost 658 million dollars, stated the official of the Bulgarian government Cveta Kamenova. The second part of the study will be assigned to the Austrian-German company ALS which has carried out the first part and will be financed by the EU.

    [09] Fuel prices

    There are changes in fuel prices starting today.

    Unleaded will cost 2.8 drachmas less per litre, super by 2.7 drachmas, while diesel will be more expensive by 1.6 drachmas per litre and heating oil by 2 drachmas.

    [10] Plans to fight poverty

    Prime minister Kostas Simitis chaired a meeting with competent ministers on Wednesday. It was decided at the meeting to create a network against poverty and social isolation with the aim to assist poor people in urban centers and other districts.

    The Labour ministry will have a coordinating role in the network, while the final decisions will be announced after the technical aspects of the issue are completed in a few weeks.

    [11] Religious affiliation on ID cards

    The outcome of the campaign of the Church of Greece regarding the petition on the issue of the state-issued identity cards and the religious affiliation on them, will be announced in March, as the president of the Synodic Committee for ID cards, metropolitan bishop Ierotheos of Nafpaktos announced.

    [12] Athens bourse

    On the Athens bourse, the general share price index had significant losses of 2.42% on Wednesday, closing at 3,191.85 points.
