After the meeting, the Foreign ministry announced that it would close down all passages at the border with Kosovo and called for an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council and the creation of a security zone between Kosovo and FYROM. The United States is in favour of a military intervention of the FYROM forces to face the situation in cooperation with NATO, said yesterday the US ambassador to Skopje Mark Ainik. From his side, the President of Yugoslavia Voislav Kostunica expressed the hope that peace in the Balkans would be secured. From Tirana, the Albanian government denounced the recent violent incidents and called on the Albanians to stop attacks. In Athens, the General Army Staff is in constant contact with the operation room of the Greek force in Kosovo and keeps National Defence minister informed. The 34th Greek control company, at the border between Kosovo and Skopje is on the alert, having the control of the Skopje- Blatse-Belgrade road, which has been shut down. [02] Papandreou on a three-day official visit to AustriaThe Cyprus issue, Greek-Turkish relations, developments in the Balkans and specifically in Yugoslavia, will be the focus of discussions due to be held in Vienna today between the Greek Foreign minister Yorgos Papandreou and the political leadership of Austria.Additionally, the two sides will discuss ways that could lead to a further improvement of Athens-Vienna relations in various sectors as well as the expansion and institutional reforms of the European Union following the European meeting in Nice and finally the two countries' cooperation in International organizations. Mr. Papandreou will also have the chance to meet with members of the Greek community living in Vienna at a reception organized for his honour. Tomorrow, he is going to visit the historic Greek-orthodox Metropolis of Vienna and the Metropolitan of Austria and Exarch of Hungary Michael. [03] Tsohatzopoulos warms up relations with SyriaThe warming up of relations between Greece and Syria as well as the entire Arab world, was the outcome of the National Defence minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos' visit to Damascus.Yesterday Mr. Tsohatzopoulos was received by the President of Syria Basar al Asad, whom he briefed on Greece's policy on security and defence on a European and national basis, stressing at the same time the importance Athens gave to Peace and Security in the wider region. Additionally, Mr. Tsochatzopoulos met with Patriarch Ignatios and representatives of the Greek community of Damascus. [04] Scotland Yard Chief to visit Athens todayScotland Yard Chief Sir John Steevens is expected to arrive in Athens today, where he will meet successively with the Public Order minister and the Chief of the Greek police.Scotland Yard is to transfer its "know-how" to the Greek police in an attempt to combat terrorism and to organize in a better way the 2004 Olympics. [05] PASOK deputies ask for changesAccording to the newspaper "To Vima Tis Kyriakis" Labour undesecretary Christos Protopapas hosted a dinner at his house in the presence of Prime minister Costas Simitis and PASOK deputies Themelis, Neonakis, Reppas and Anna Diamantopoulou.
