THE VOICE OF GREECE 21/3/2001 2:40:52 μμ [01] FYROM 24 hour ultimatum to ethnic Albanian rebelsWith the aim to avoid unnecesary casualties and the loss of life of the innocent civilians whom the terrorists hold as hostages, the Former Yiougoslav Republic of Macedonia on Tuesday gave ethnic Albanian rebels a 24 hour ultimatum to put down their weapons and surrender or withdraw from its territory.The ultimatum, signed by the Interior and Defence Ministries said FYROM troops would not fire on rebel positions at the town of Tetovo from midnight Tuesday to midnight Wednesday unless attacked. After this deadline, FYROM security forces will continue using all means against positions of terrorists until they are completely destroyed , it said. At the same time the commander of the ethnic Albanian guerillas said they would ignore FYROM's ultimatum to withdraw from their positions and threatened to trasfer battles in the streets of Tetovo. Meanwhile , FYROM's two main Albanian parties on Tuesday signed a statement urging ethnic Albanian guerillas to lay down their arms and return to their homes. In parallel, the KFOR , international peace keeping force has sent 300 Noregian and British soldiers to the American sector to strengthen patrols at the Kossovo-FYROM borders. The American State Department announced yesterday that Washingthon and its NATO allies intended to assist Skopyie with more military aid but not armed forces to crack down the ethnic Albanians uprising. Greek National Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos stated that the Greek peace keeping force stationed in Kosovo will not be increased, while the Speaker of the Greek parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis who is visiting Skopje, expressed Greece's opposition to any distabilizing activities in the region. Finally , Prime-minister Kostas Simitis who is in London, stated on Tuesday night, that both Britain and Greece agree that further negative developments in FYROM should be averted, to prevent the spreading of the crisis in the Balkans. [02] Greek Foreign undersecratary, Grigoris Niotis in WashingthonGreek Foreign undersecratary, Grigoris Niotis who is in Washinthon ,will meet with senior members of the Greek community there. Mr. Niotis will visit the White House on Friday on the occasion of the signing of the declaration of Greece's independence, which defines March 25 as the "The Greek and American Republics Day".[03] State Coucil ruled-exclusion of religious affilation legal, nationality compulsoryAccording to a decision of the majority of the plenum of the State Council the abolition of religious affiliation from ID cards is legal and constitutional while the inclusion of nationality is obligatory.[04] Labour Minister stressed need for reforms in thwe social security systemLabour Minister Tasos Yannitsis stated that the dialogue on reforms in the social security system will begin shortly after Easter as the report of the British agency is expected to be released at the first half of April. Mr Yannitsis underlined the need of new measures and stressed that the goverment was determined to go ahead with a just social reform that would ensure pensions to today's workers.[05] Contract signed on the operational program concerning medical care during the Olympic GamesHealth minister Alekos Papadopoulos and the president of the ''Athens 2004'' organising committee Yanna Angelopoulou signed on Tuesday a contract on the materialization of the operational program concerning medical care during the Olympic Games.Eighteen hospitals in Attica, 3 in Thessaloniki, one in Hiraklion-Crete, one in Patras and one in Volos will cover the medical needs of the Olympic Games while a polyclinic will be created at the Olympic village. Meanwhile, Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos together with the ministry's scientific group, confirmed that the rowing installations will be built in Marathonas as it was initially scheduled - despite the arguments of the Archaeological society which he described as ungrounded. An event to honor the medal winners of the Special Olympics, will take place in parliament today. The Speaker of the House Apostolos Kaklamanis will present all the athletes with the gold medal of the Greek parliament, together with an honorary papyrus and the edition ''Illustrations of the Parliament House''. [06] Resolution of the Cyprus political problem for the admssion of all Cypriots in the EUIn his speech at the American Senate's Foreign Affairs Committee, the American assistant secretary of state for political affairs Mark Grossman assessed that admission of all Cypriots to the EU pressupposed the resolution of the political problem of Cyprus.Mr. Grossman statement could be considered as an exercise of pressure on both Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots, as well as an indication of the stand, the US intends to adopt in the next crucial two years until the coclusion Cyprus-EU accession negotiations. [07] Pope John Paul in Athens on May 4-5Pope John Paul will visit Greece for alost two days on May 4-5. The dates were announced after a meeting of the head of the Greek church Archibshop Hristodoulos with representatives of the Vatican to discuss the last details of the Pope's visit to Athens.In the meantime delegations of the Ecumenic Patriarchate and the Church of Greece will meet in Fanari to examine pending issues in relations between the two churches. [08] Amendment to resolve compound interest issueAn amendment on coumpound interest rates of Banks will be tabled in parliament today and according to information, interest on the starting capital will not be able to exceed double the amount of overdue loans conracted after January 1st 1991.[09] New international airport in Spata opened its gates to the publicThe new Eleftherios Venizelos international airport at Spata, opened its gates to the public on Tuesday. According to the manager of the airport's operations, Spyros Stefanou, approximately 5,000 people had the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of all the facilities offered by one of the largest airports in Europe.Expressing his satisfaction at the public's overwhelmingly positive response, environment minister Kostas Laliotis said that it had surpassed even the most optimistic forecasts. [10] Athens stock marketOn the Athens stock market the general share index went up yesterday by 1,16% to close at 3108 points.[11] Weather forecastFine and warm day in Attica today with temperatures ranging from 12 to 23 degrees centigrade.
