The strike took place within the framework of the Panhellenic strike of the General Confederation of the Greek Workers in reaction to the proposed measures from the government regarding the Social Security System.No newspapers will be available today due to the strike. This is the second twenty-four hour strike staged by the Mass media within twenty days. Participating in the strike were also employees of the Public transport and hospitals, merchants and Banks which will continue their strike also today. According to the General Confederation of the Greek Workers and the Civil Servants, the participation of employees in the strike was big. Demonstrators gathered at Pedion tou Areos in Athens and other cities all over Greece. In the meantime, the Social Security issue will be discussed in today' s meeting of the newly formed New Democracy party political committee under the chairmanship of Costas Karamanlis. The opening speech will be delivered by deputy Marietta Yiannakou, who will refer to the recent statements made by the party' s leader Costas Karamanlis on the Social Security System. In addition to New Democracy' s fixed positions on the issue, that is the re-allocation of funds in the public sector, the financing of the Social Security System by three parties and the non-extension of age limits for pensions, it is expected that the participants will discuss about private insurance and the voluntary stay of employees in their jobs despite age limits. However, technocrats will study the issue and present their positions on the issue, so that the New Democracy party can present its final positions. [02] Universities remain closed in reaction to the upgrading of Technological InstitutesAlmost all Universities in the country remain closed, since University rectors are expected to submit their resignations in reaction to the upgrading of the Technological Institutes.The rectors' decisions will be taken within the framework of the decisions of European Union country-members' Education ministers, who are meeting in Prague today. [03] Patriarch of Alexandria Petros visits the Church of GreecePatriarch of Alexandria Petros began an official visit to the Church of Greece yesterday. The Patriarch will stay in Greece until May 25.The Patriarch was welcomed at the airport by Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos. During his stay the Patriarch will receive the Grand Cross of the Order of Apostle Paul, the highest distinction of the Church of Greece. The Patriarch of Alexandria will meet with the President of the Hellenic Republic Costis Stephanopoulos, National Defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, the Speaker of the Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis, Education minister Petros Efthymiou and the Mayor of Athens Dimitris Avramopoulos. [04] Merta assures of respect of the Greek minority' s rights during the elections in AlbaniaThe message of the Inter-Balkan meeting of Foreign ministers of Balkan countries that took place in Tirana, Albania, is that the countries of South-eastern Europe wish and intend to cooperate among themselves and agree on the non-change of the existing borders.This was stated by Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou to ERT on the sidelines of the meeting, who referring to his meeting with the Albanian Prime Minister Ilir Merta, said that he was assured by the Albanian Premier that during the Albanian elections the following month there will be no repetition of the incidents of Cheimara. Mr. Merta also assured the Greek Foreign minister that the Greek minority' s rights would be respected and that Albanian nationals of Greek origin would be transferred to Albania to vote. In the meantime, according to Greek diplomatic circles, a communique was issued by the participants of the meeting, which hailed the formation of the new government of Skopje, while the terrorist acts of Albanian extremits groups in Skopje were denounced. Additionally, the proposal of the Greek side regarding a programme to collect small arms from civilians was accepted. [05] Agelopoulou presents progress made on Olympic worksThe President of the "Athens 2004" organisation Yianna Agelopoulou Daskalaki presented the progress made for the preparation of the Olympic Games to the Executive Committee of the International Olympics Committee in Lozane yesterday.Following the meeting of the Executive Committee the Vice President of the International Olympics Committee Jacques Rogge said during a press conference that Greece could receive now a "green card" as regards the progress on Olympic works. [06] New Zealand and Australian officials to honor the Battle of CreteIn order to be present at the events for the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark is vising Greece officially from yesterday. She is accompanied by veterans who fought in Crete before 60 years and a delegation of businessmen, who are expected to meet with Greek officials in order to boost the economic cooperation between the two countries.Visiting Crete is also the Australian minister of veterans Bruce Scott, who is accompanied by Australian officials and 22 veterans aged between 78 and 85. The veterans fought in Crete and other parts of Greece 60 years ago. [07] Venizelos on official visit to RussiaCulture minister Evagelos Venizelos has been paying a three-day official visit to Moscow and Saint Petesburgh since yesterday.Within the framework of his visit Mr. Venizelos will meet with government officials and personages and will declare open the sessions of the conference entitled "Greece and Russia" organized in Moscow by Russian Neo-Hellenists. Additionally, during his visit to Saint Petesburgh, Mr. Venizelos will inaugurate the exhibition entitled "The Greek World in the Russian Art". [08] Fuel prices continue their upward courseThe upward course of fuel prices in Greece continued yesterday with the price of unleaded going up by 5,6 drachmas per litre and diesel oil by 2,5 drachmas.Governent officials are on the alert to avert any inflatory pressure that might be caused by the rise of fuel prices. The Development minister is going to meet with representatives of oil refineries and gas stations to discuss their stance on the issue. [09] New law allows the stay of thousands of foreigners in GreeceThousands of foreigners, who are living and working in Greece, will be allowed to stay in Greece according to the new law for immigrants which will be valid from June 2. The immigrants will have to submit the supporting documents within two months.[10] Compensations for victims during German occupationAnyone who had been a victim or relatives of victims during the German occupation in the World War II, can submit their applications to the International Immigration Organisation until August so that they can be compensated.Up to now, 2.700 people have submitted their applications.
