    [01] Weather forecast

    Scattered cloud is forecast throughout the country ,turning to showers or storms mainly in the north. Winds southerly, light to moderate. In Attica temperatures will range from 18-31 degrees Celsius in Thessaloniki from 15-25 degrees Celsius and on the Aegean islands from 18-28 degrees Celsius.

    [02] GSEE insists on trilateral funding of social security system

    The executive committees of the GSEE and the Union of Civil servants meet today to decided on their stand related to the invitation for talks by Labour Minister Tasos Yiannitsis. However, the majority of the workers' unions appear reserved regarding the Labour Minster's call for a dialogue on reforms in the social security system as they insist on the government 's commitment for trilateral funding of the social security system.

    On his part, the President of the General Confederation of Greek Workers Hristos Polyzogopoulos appears determined to meet with Labour Minister to support the positions of the union.

    The General Sec. of the GSEE, Giannis Manolis called the government to commit itself in written for the trilateral funding of the social security system.

    [03] Meeting of Prime-minister Simitis with President Stefanopoulos and Pasok party deputies

    During his meeting with Pasok Party deputies, Prime-minister Kostas Simitis stressed that the government's top priority is to serve social interests regardless of the political cost.

    In reference to the social security issue, Mr. Simitis underlined the need for a rapid solution ,noting though the apparent dividing lines from the ND Party policies.

    Prime-minister Simitis was received by the President of the Hellenc Republic Kostis Stefanopoulos yesterday with whom he discussed current foreign and domestic affairs.

    Following the 50-minute talks, Mr.Simitis stated that Greece has to act now in order to ensure Cyprus's accession to the EU during Greece's presidential term , i.e. the first half of 2003.

    [04] Undersecretary for Economics will brief the parliament today

    Undersecretary for Economics Giorgos Drys will today brief the parliament on the implementation course of the 2001 budget. Today's session of the parliament s expected with high interest following the ND party's denouncements about "black holes " and " not surplus but fictitious budget".

    [05] 2001-landmark for Greece's economy

    Presenting a brief report on the course of the economy, National Economy Minister, Yiannos Papantoniou underlined that 2001 was a landmark regarding the pace of development, investments and the dealing with critical issues such as unemployment and inflation.

    [06] Former years Lyceum graduates will enter tertiary education

    The State Council has for the second consecutive year annulled the Education Ministry's decision determining the percentage of former years Lyceum graduates to enter tertiary education thus allowing candidates with the requested grades to be admitted to tertiary education within the category of outnumbered.

    [07] Greece's Foreign Minister met American National Security adviser and CIA Chief

    Greece's Foreign Minister Giorge Papadreou -who is presently on an official visit to the US yesterday met with American President Giorge Bush Security Advser Condoleezza Rice to whom he expressed Greece's intention to play a leading role in the Balkan region.

    Mr.Papandreou also met with the CIA Chief Giorge Genet with whom he discussed issues related to the combat of terrorism. Today Mr.Papandreou will speak at the Foreign Affairs Council.

    [08] Turkey has to comply with European Human Rights Court decisions

    The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe ,Lord Russel Johnson warned Turkey that its participation in the Council of Europe would be doubted unless it complied with the decisions of the European Human Rights Court. Lord Jonhson's statements referred to the recent decisions of the European Human Rights Court regarding massive human rights violations during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

    [09] State Council -illegal police presence in indoor gatherings

    The State Council ruled as illegal and contrary to the European accord on human rights the Public Order Ministry's regulation related to the police presence in indoor public gatherings.

    [10] Shorter military service if admitted to Merchant Marine Academies

    An amendment providing for a 12 month military service in the Navy for those who enter in Merchant Marine Academies and work for 3-years in Merchant Marine ships will be tabled in the parliament today by the Merchant Marine Minister Hristos Papoutsis.

    [11] Upgrading Athens -84 billion dr. project

    Environment Minister Kostas Laliotis yesterday presented an action plan of the Environment Ministry entitled " 2004- Another Attica another Athens " aimed to upgrade several regions in Athens. The total cost of the project amounts to 84 billion dr and it is expected to change the picture of the capital city in view of the Olympic Games.

    [12] Regional development budget approved yesterday

    EU Commissioner responsible for regional development Michell Barrie yesterday signed a 522 billion dr regional development program for Attica for the period 2001-2006. 73% of the total budget comes from the EU structural funds ad 267% fro Greek public ad private investments.

    [13] Gasoline prices down

    Retail gasoline prices in Greece are likely to drop by 6-7 dr per litter as from midnight Wednesday for the coming week, tracking world markets, Development Minister Nikos Hristodoulakis told reporters after talks with fuel industry officials.

    Mr.Hristodoulakis also said that he would order tighter spot checks in garages after reports of major divergences in retail prices from the government's indicative rates.

    The Olympic Airways company has an attractively cheap offer on fares from Athens and Thessaloniki to most European cities. Specifically, the cost of fares ranges from 58000- 89000 dr till June 16th.

    [14] Greek beaches, cleanest in all Europe

    Greek beaches are the cleanest in all of Europe , according to a EU report that rates the quality of swimming waters in all of its member-states. Official measurements carried out by the Environment Ministry ,98,8% of the Greek beaches are fit to swim, as they meet all the strict measures imposed by the Greek ad EU legislation.

    [15] Greek-Australian conference on the island of Korfu

    Over 300 prominent doctors and lawyers from Australia are to take part in the 8th International Greek-Australian Medical and Bar Conference to be held on the island of Corfu from 4-9 June. The subject of the conference is the offer of medical and law services through the internet.

    [16] Joint Greek-Turkish rescue team

    Athens and Ancara have decided to set up a joint unit to deal with natural disasters. The rescue unit will be comprise of 80 members and entitled " Joint Greek-Turkish rapid intervention team to deal with natural disasters.

    [17] Cashes between Albanian guerrillas and government forces in FYROM

    Clashes between Albanian guerrillas and government forces broke out in FYROM last night However, the international community appears determined to proceed to the implementation of the disarmament agreement and disbanding of extremists guerrillas from south Serbia.

    [18] Israel and the Palestine

    The UN called on Israel and the Palestine authorities to comply with the recommendations of the Mitcell report. The committee has called for unconditional cease fire, freeze of Israel settlement and the comat of terrorism on the part of the Palestinians.

    [19] Ċarthquake in Russia

    A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 % on the Richter scale was recorded in Krasodar, in Russia last night. No victims or material damage has been reported.
