[01] Bush fails to convince EU leaders

The European Union summit meeting is taking place in Gothenburg, Sweden today focusing on the European Union expansion and the situation in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).

Yesterday American President George W. Bush managed neither to convince the European leaders for his reasons not to sign the Kyoto agreement which concerns the protection of the Environment, nor to make them accept his plans for the "Star Wars" programme.

Regarding the European Union expansion, Prime Minister Costas Simitis stressed that Greece's goal is Cyprus' fast accession to the European Union on a fixed date. Mr. Simitis also forsaw a slow down of the Development of the European Economies including the Greek economy if recession continued in the United States.

The European leaders as well as the American President also discussed about the situation in FYROM, ruling out through a joint communique the possibility of NATO's military intervention to FYROM and supporting a political solution.

In the meantime, Press undersecretary Tylemachos Chytiris stated that the Greek plan for the resolution of the crisis in FYROM would be discussed by the coalition government in Skopje.

From his side, New Democracy President Costas Karamanlis, who is in Gothenburg participating in the meeting of the European Popular party, reiterated that a military intevention of the International Community might be needed.

Replying to a question as to whether the Greek government was aware that UCK is raising money in Greece, Mr. Chytiris said that the government knew everything and was taking all necessary measures.

At the same time, NATO Secretary General George Robertson and European Union official responsible on foreign policy and Defence visited Skopje yesterday and expressed their support to FYROM President Trajkovski's proposal for a political dialogue and reforms for the securing of the Albanians' rights.

However, Mr. Trajkovski as well as the rebels' political leader Ali Ahmedi asked for NATO's intervention to the crisis.

Specifically, Mr. Ahmedi asked for the deployment of a peacekeeping force, while Mr. Traikosfsky NATO's mediation in the contacts with the rebels and the contribution of the Alliance in the disarming process of the extremists.

Mr. Robertson rejected Mr. Ali Ahmedi's request, but epxressed his support to Mr. Boris Trajkovski's efforts, avoiding however to clarify the role the Alliance could play in the peace process.

Finally, as regards the Greenhouse effect, Americans and European did not manage to bridge their differences, since President Bush reiterated that his country disagreed with ratification of the Kyoto protocol.

However, both sides stated that they would continue their dialogue, while the Swedish mounted police clashed with thousands of demonstrators, who were describing the American President a "Toxic Texan".

At the same time, the Swedish Justice minister was demonstrating with members of Amnesty International against death penalty in the United States.

[03] Draft bill for release of sea trasport causes reaction shipowners

Merchant Marine minister Christos Papoutsis stated in Parliament yesterday that the government would not accept any blackmail from ship owners, following the passing of the draft bill regarding the release of sea transport.

Earlier, shipowners had threatened to lower the Greek flag from their vessels and take recourse to the European Union if the draft bill was not withdrawn.

In tandem, Mr. Papoutsis accused the New Democracy party that it was cooperating with shipowners.
