THE VOICE OF GREECE 3/8/2001 12:24:00 μμ NEWS HEADLINES Failed arrest of convict leads to replacement of Police Chief Gale force winds cancel departure of ships Merchant Marine mechanics call for better maintance and inspection of ships Traffic police takes measures on national highways American Senate in support of Olympic truce in 2004 [01] Failed arrest of convict leads to replacement of Police ChiefAt noon today the Governmental Cabinet for Foreign Affairs and Defense will convene under the Prime Minister Costas Simitis, who pushed back his departure for holidays in order to choose a replacement for Mr. Georgakopoulos, the Chief of Police, who resigned after the unsuccessful arrest of wanted criminal Costas Pasaris.According to information more changes are expected in the leadership of the police. Due to that fact Mr. Simitis is going to meet first with Public Order minister Michalis Chrysohoides. Meanwhile, new laws for organised crime and terrorism were applied for the first time in Greece on Thursday in charges brought against 24-year-old Dimitris Polydoropoulos, an accomplice of escaped convict Costas Pasaris. Police bungled an attempt to arrest Passaris on Wednesday and he successfully evaded capture after walking into an ambush set up in Polydoropoulos' apartment. Polydoropoulos was charged with forming a criminal organisation as per the new laws, illegal possession of arms and ammunition jointly with Passaris and possession and dealing in narcotics. He also faces lesser charges or harbouring a wanted criminal and illegal possession and operation of radio receivers. Pasaris was charged in his absence for illegally carrying a firearm because he was holding a gun when he let himself into Polydoropoulos' apartment in Neos Kosmos on Wednesday From its side, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis accussed the government of mixing the police with politics, while Press Deputy minister Tilemachos Chytiris maintained that crime had been limited substancially during the last years. [02] Gale force winds cancel departure of shipsThere has been a ban for the departure of passenger ships from the port of Rafina and some from the port of Pireaus due to the gale force winds blowing in sea areas.[03] Merchant Marine mechanics call for better maintance and inspection of shipsThe Pan-Hellenic Union of Mechanics of the Merchant Marine is going to submit evidence to the public prosecutor in Pireaus proving the violation of the legislation regarding the safety of ships on behalf of ship companies. Specifically, the mechanics are speaking of incorrect maintance of ships and a small number of inspections.[04] Traffic police takes measures on national highwaysThe traffic police is taking additional measures on national highways as of today in order to achieve a safe circulation of cars and prevent accidents.
