    [01] Kederis and Iakovakis qualify for the finals

    In the World Championships in Edmonton Costas Kederis qualified with 20.30'' in the semi-finals of 200m by coming first and is aiming at winning the gold medal in the final race, while Pericles Iakovakis qualified with 49.96'' in the semifinals for 400m hurdles.

    Niki Xanthou took the sixth position in the long jump with 6 m and 76 cm.

    On Tuesday Mirela Jelili won the silver medal in javelin with 65,78m and Katerina Thanou came third in 100m with 10.91''.

    [02] Duties delay Simitis' vacations

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis has decided to delay his departure to Sifnos because he received his party' s new charter, which he will have to study and then send to the members of other committees. By Thursday he will have received a report describing his party's new positions. The committees to study the party's charter and positions will convene on August 21st and 22nd in view of the PASOK Central Committee's meeting due to be held on August 31st, which will present its suggestions as regards the October Congress.

    [03] Tsoukatos meets Scandalides

    In view of the PASOK party Congress, the party's Secretary Costas Scandalides and deputy Theodoros Tsoukatos met for one hour yesterday. Mr. Tsoukatos presented Mr. Scandalides with his proposals on the partys political positions.

    [04] 25 new measures for the protection of buildings from earthquakes

    The Environment ministry and the Organisation of Antiseismic Protection presented 25 new measures for the protection of buildings from earthquakes.

    According to the new antiseismic regulation it will be forbidden for buildings to be built on ground that does not meet certain anti-seismic standards.

    [05] German Association to buy Scaramangas Shipyards

    According to the Assessing committee, a German Association of shipyards will be the one to buy Scaramangas shipyards. Earlier, Employees' Union at the shipyards, which owns 49% of the companys shares had supported the idea for the purchase of the shipyards by the Germans.

    According to ETVA (Hellenic Bank of Industrial Development), negotiations for the privatization process will commence immediately and if they prove fruitless, then negotiations will continue with the Elefsis Shipyards, the second bidder.

    [06] Helicopters to have access on four islands

    Transport minister Christos Verelis has anounced that helicopters will be able to land on four islands in the Ionian and Aegean Sea after infrastructure works are carried out.

    Specifically, these islands will be Ithaca, Patmos, Tinos and Lesvos.

    [07] Reforms in the Greek police

    Following the failed attempt to arrest escape convict Costas Passaris and in view of the 2004 Olympics, the Public Order ministry has decided to introduce reforms in the Greek police.

    According to the new reforms, policemen will have to receive training until they retire and will also have to get acquainted with new arms.
