[01] Greece reacts to Turkish accusation about terrorism
The reaction of Athens to the statements made by the Chief of the
Turkish Army Staff Hussein Kivrikoglu who accused Greece of terrorism,
was immediate. Both the Greek Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas and
the National Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos attributed
Kivrikoglu s statements to expediencies and efforts Turkey is making to
take advantage of the fluid international situation.
[02] Bi-ministerial meeting on the 2004 Olympics
Prime Minister Kostas Simitis will chair a bi-ministerial meeting today
in view of the visit the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
delegation paid recently to Athens. The meeting will cover the issues
of delays in the Olympic projects, and alternative scenarios to deal
with them and with the road works.
[03] EU funds to Greece
More than 2 billion drachmas will pour into Greece from EU funds that
concern the closing of the 2nd EU Support Framework and the promotion
of works of the 3rd EU Support Framework, as the National Economy
Minister Yannos Papantoniou stated after the meeting of Social and
Economic Committee yesterday.
[04] The Lebanese President visited Greece officially
Prime Minister Simitis had talks on international and bilateral issues
yesterday with the President of Lebanon Emil Lahud who paid an official
visit to Athens.
[05] Greek military exercise ''Parmenion''
The military exercise code-named "Parmenion" ended yesterday with the
impressive landing of the Zubr hovercraft in the region of
Alexandroupolis, while the President of the Republic of Greece
Konstantinos Stefanopoulos and the National Defense Minister Akis
Tsochatzopoulos attended the last and major maneuver.
[06] Fuel prices go down again
The price of fuel is expected to drop significantly as of tomorrow. Gas
will cost 7 drachmas less per liter, while the price of petrol will
remain unchanged.
[07] Greek airlines increase ticket prices
As of today, Greek airline companies will go ahead with increasing the
prices of tickets to deal with the additional cost due to the raises to
insurance rates. Specifically, the airlines Olympic Airways,
Agean-Cronus, Axon will increase the price on tickets by 1.300
drachmas.
[08] Athens bourse
Significant gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange on
Tuesday. The general index rose to +1,38% at 2,230.11 points, while the
volume of transactions was at 110.80 million Euro or 37.75 billion
drachmas. Of the stocks trading yesterday, 286 recorded gains and 50
had losses, while 42 remained stable.
[09] OSE acquires new trains
The Greek Railways Organization (OSE in Greek) will acquire new trains
and railway equipment 300 billion drachmas worth in the next few years,
in the framework of program agreements.
[10] Parliament passed provision on nationality certificate
The Greek Parliament approved unanimously yesterday a provision, which
abolishes definitively the nationality certificate. The decision has
evidently met an old demand of the Greeks living in Australia.
[11] Greeks from Hungary visit Athens
A delegation of 60Greeks living in Hungary arrived in Athens yesterday
at the invitation of the National Defense Undersecretary Dimitris
Apostolakis. The delegation will remain in Greece until October 10 and
ill be accommodated in Army and Airforce installations. The hospitality
program includes free medical tests in military hospitals, visit to
tourist and archaeological sites. In Addition, they will enjoy the
services f the National Defense Ministry in solving problems concerning
their eligibility in War pensions for invalids. It is the second such
group of Greeks coming from Eastern Europe countries that the National
Defense Ministry hosts in Greece.
[12] 53rd International Book Fair in Frankfurt
Greece is the honored country in the program of events that will be
held in the framework of the 53rd International Book Fair in Frankfurt.
Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos and the president of the
Organizing Committee "Frankfurt 2001" George Romeos presented the
relative program yesterday.
