[06] Latest developments after U.S led attacks on Afganistan

In an effort to calm down American citizens over the possibility of a bio-chemical warfare, experts in the U.S warn that panick and anxiety are greater threats to human life than the antrax virus itself.

In the meantime , in Washington doctors are fighting to save the life of a mail sorter who worked in the main post office that serves the U.S capitol after he became gravely ill with inhaled antrax the most deadly form of the potential germ warfare weapon.

In parallel, U.S Capitol authorities announced yesterday that office buildings for the House of Representatives and Senate would remain closed today pending checks for antrax but both chambers would be in session on Tuesday. House of Representatives , along with office buildings where much of the Congress work is done , were closed at the close of business last Wednesday while experts checked offices and ventilation systems for potentially deadly antrax spores. U.S warplanes slammed Afganistan yesterday , starting the third week of President Bushs war on terrorism.

Sunday' s air strikes were believed aimed at Taliban front lines north of the capital of Kabul, where troops were massed to hold off any attack by the oppostion Northern Alliance . The Northern Alliance , only 35 miles from Kabul, has been eagerly awaiting U. S air strikes so that they can advance . The ruling Taliban Press Minister said that at least 18 civilians were killed and 23 wounded during the air strikes. In the meantime , the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff , Air-Force General Richard Myers yesterday dismised a taliban claim to have killed 20-25 of more than 100 elite U.S special forces who Friday night raided a command center near Kandahar used by taliban spiritual leader Mullah Mohammad Omar. However, the Al Zarira television network yesterday reported Afganistan' s ruling Taliban claim that they have discovered pieces of an American helicopter in Bab Sahib hills , some burnt tires and parts and traces of blood. E.U Foreign policy chief Javier Solana dennounced the Taliban on Sunday as a group of fanatics and said he hoped the former king of Afganistan would soon succed insetting up a new coalition government in Kabul. Solana held more than an hour of talks in Rome with 87-year old Mohammad Zahir Shah to discuss the ex-monarch' s plans to draw Afganistans many warring factions togetther into a single administration to replace the hardline Taliban regime. European Union leaders at a meeting in Belgium on F riday pledged wholehearted support for the U.S led military action in Afganistan and indirectly backed the removal of the Taliban. Many western diplomats , fearful of a power vacuum should the taliban collapse under the weight of the U.S onslaught are pinning their hopes on Zahir Shah to establish a credible alternative government. In a relative development , Russian President , Vladimir Putin, the President of Tazikistan Rakhnonov and the senior leader of Afganistan' s opposition Burhanudin Rabbani signed a joint declaration this morning , in which they underline the need for a political solution in Afganistan . They also stress that all factions should participate in the formation of a government in Afganistan with the cooperation of the U.N and foreign goverments. At the Shangai summit of the Asia Pacific Cooperation Forum, leaders condemned last month' s attacks on the U.S in the strongest terms and Putin described U.S action in Afganistan as measured and adequate, while the US nd Russia agreed to closely cooperate for the control of nuclear , chemical and biological weapons.
