The Iranian Tv has reported that the bombarding of Herat in Western Afganistan has resulted in the death of 20 people and the injury of 8 more. A mosque at prayer time, was another target of the jet fighters. However, an American official has stated that the Americans met with a strong opposition. In tandem, a United Nations representative in Islamabad has reported that the continuous pounding of Herat, Jalalabad and Kadahar has forced 70% of their inhabitants to flee their towns. At the same time, American Secretary of State Collin Powel said that the ex-Afgani King could participate in the formation of new government in the future. However, Mr. Powel did not refer to the possibility for moderate Taleban participation in the future government, as he said that the Kabul regime should leave since it was part of Osama Bin Laden's organisation Al Qaeda. Meanwhile, US investigators say they have found anthrax in a fifth area of the Capitol complex in Washington.Police spokesman Dan Nichols said the anthrax was found in a goods lift area of the Senate Hart office building. Last week a letter opened in the office of Senate majority leader Tom Daschle located in the building was found to be contaminated with anthrax. The Hart building and all other congressional office buildings have been closed since the evening of 17 October as tests for anthrax are carried out. But one office building Russell was reopened on Wednesday. A Senate media worker who was in the Hart building has been admitted to hospital for possible inhalation anthrax the most lethal form of the disease. Five other people all of them Washington postal workers are in the same hospital undergoing tests for possible anthrax infection. The American Senate adopted a new bill yesterday evening, allowing the offer of econo mic aid to other countries as Israel and Egypt to be spent on the fight against World Terrorism. The bill, which was approved with 96 votes in favor and 2 against, allows the allocation of 5 billion US dollar worth military aid to the United States allies who wish to combat terrorism and 255 million US dollars as aid to the Afgani refugees. In the meantime, in an interview with the newspaper "Telegraph", British Prime Minister maintained that it would be easier for Osama Bin Laden to be killed during bombardments or a ground assault than to be arrested, since as he said he is very well protected and armed. At the same time, an Al Qaeda cadre, who is being kept imprisoned said that Bin Laden has bought anthrax and other dangerous substances. It should be noted that until today, American scientists have not been able to locate the senders of envelopes containing the anthrax bacteria. Additionally, 25 illegal immigrants from Iran, Siera Leone, Nigeria and Afganistan were located off the island of Kos by the port authorities of the island yesterday and are now being detained.[05] Papandreou on a visit to HungaryForeign minister Yorgos Papandreou, who is paying an official visit to Hungary, met with his Hungarian counterpart Yanos Martoni in Budapest yesterday. Mr. Papandreou re-affirmed Greece' s support for Hungary' s accession to the European Union and Mr. Martoni from his side assured his interlocutor that Hungary would support Cypruss accession to the Eurpean Union without the prior solution of the Cyprus issue. Next, Mr. Papandreou will be paying an official visit to Iran, where he will discuss the 11 September developments, Greece and Iran' s coordination for the combatting of terrorism, as well as Irans relations with the European Union.[06] Prodi and Weston in CyprusEuropean Commission President Romano Prodi is paying a two-day official visit to Nicosia today, accompanied by commissioner Gunter Verhoygen, who is responsible for the European Union expansion. The two men are going to meet with the Cypriot leadership.According to Community sources, the European officials expect to verify the results of the Helsniki Summit on the basis of which Cyprus accession to the EU is disconnected to the resolution of the Cyprus issue. In tandem, it will be stressed that accession negotiations for Cyprus are progressing since Cyprus is ahead of all candidate countries and Cyprus accession negotiations could end within 2002. The two officials are also expected to express their satisfaction over the solidarity manifested by Cyprus on the issue of terrorism and its streamlining with the Communitys resolutions. In the meantime, special State Department coordinator for the Cyprus issue Thomas Weston visited Athens yesterday within the framework of his tour to Athens, Nicosia and Ankara. He met with the Cypriot ambassador to Athens Costas Tritaris, whom he briefed on his visit to Ankara and examined the latest developments according to which the Turkish-Cypriot side does not wish to participate in the Cyprus proximity talks. Afterwards, Mr. Weston left for Nicosia, where he will meet with the Cyrpiot leadership.
