    [02] Alpha Bank and National Bank of Greece to be merged

    The administration committees of Alpha Bank and the National Bank of Greece, are convening today to decide about the merging of two banks. The new bank consortium will be controlling about 60% of the local credit sector, with a joint capital of over 3.5 trillion drachmas. Following the news about the merging of the two banks, the National Bank of Greece stocks rose by 17,73% at the New York Stock Exchange.

    Papantoniou denies dispatch of Greek soldiers to Afganistan

    The Pentagon has said that B-52 bombers are in use across Afghanistan, carrying out intensive bombing raids against Taleban positions. Rear Admiral John Stufflebeem, deputy director of operations for the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters that the B-52s were carpet bombing targets "all over the country, including Taliban forces in the north."

    "We do use it, we have used it and will use it when we need to," he said. Taleban as saying they have just successfully beaten off an offensive by Northern Alliance forces, in an area hit by US bombers.

    The Islamic militia earlier reported that the US-led campaign had claimed 1,500 civilian lives since it began on 7 October, as part of the war against terrorism.

    At the same time, the Americans maintain that they haver disrupted the biggest part of the Taleban telecommunications and are rejecting information according to which a Red Cross clinic had been bombed. On a relative development, the French Prime Minister has stated that French reconnaisance planes are participating in the mission as well. Meanwhile, a hospital worker from New York has died from inhalation anthrax, making her the fourth victim of the disease in October.

    Kathy Nguyen, 61, died early on Wednesday morning at a hospital in Manhattan from the most dangerous form of the disease. On a relative development, the Kansas city postal service closed yesterday and 200 o

    f its employees were called begin a treatment with antibiotics, following the discovery of traces of the anthrax bacteria in the building. Finally, government spokesman Christos Protopapas denied categorically that an attempt is made at a military camp in the central Greek city of Volos to form a unit that will be placed under NATO' s orders to be used in the military operations in Afghanistan.

    The Minister of Press and Mass Media stressed that Greece will not participate in the military operations in Afghanistan.

    Additionally, similar statements were made by National Defence minister Yiannos Papantoniou yesterday in reply to the Greeek Communist party Secretary General Aleka Papariga' s statements regarding preparation for the dispatch of Greek soldiers in Afganistan.

    [03] Papandreou on a diplomatic tour

    Foreing minister Yorgos Papandreou is beginning a diplomatic tour in Asia. Specifically, Mr. Papandreou is to visit Pakistan, India and Iran. At the same time, British Prime Minister Tony Blair is already touring the Middle East and German Chancellor Gherhard Shroeder is visiting China.

    Addressing the Parliamentary Committee of Economic Affairs, National Economy minister Nikos Christodoulakis stated that the 2002 budget will invest more on the sectors of Health, Education and Defence.

    In tandem, he pointed out that incentives would be created so as low income classes could get housing loans.

    [05] Papandreou denies critisizing Laliotis on Olympic venues issue

    New Environment, Public Works and Physical Planning minister Vaso Papandreou rejected the rumours according to which, during the interminsterial meeting, she critisized her predeccesor Mr. Laliotis on the progress of works of the Olympic venues.

    Ms Papandreou left open the possibility for the implementation of alternative senarios for the progress of works of Olympic venues that is being delayed.

    [06] Greek coastal authorities save crew members of sunk Turkish vessel

    10 members of the crew of a Turkish vessel that sank off the coast of Lesvos in the early morning hours were collected by the Greek coastal authorities and are safe.

    [07] The Thessaloniki Film Festival celebrates

    The Thessaloniki Film Festival, which began its important activities 42 years ago, is celebrating its first decade of internationalisation from 9-18 November. ERT, the Greek Radio Television has been the basic sponsor of the Festival for 11 years.
