    [01] Weather forecast.

    The weather will improve today, with rain restricted to the east and south in the morning. The rest of the country will see light cloud, which is likely to build up in the evening in the northwest. Winds northerly, moderate to very strong, soon easing off. Scattered cloud in the morning in Athens with temperatures from 10C to 19C. Same in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from 6C to 17C.

    [02] Problems in road, sea and air transport due to bad weather conditions.

    Three people dead and serious problems in road, sea and air transport, the toll of bad weather conditions that hit the country. The Athens Public Prosecutor ordered a preliminary examination into the causes of the accidents to see if there is any responsibility on the part of the competent sectors.

    Following an order by the Environment and Public Works Minister, Vaso Papandreou, engineers will inspect the 4 parts of the national road network where the most problems emerged. The goverment announced immediate compensation to the victims of the bad weather conditions and economic aid to municipalities for infrastructure works.

    The extent of problems due to the bad weather conditions gave rise to a strong dispute between the government and the opposition ND party. Government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas blamed the ND party for malfunctions in some public work projects while the ND party accused the government for inneficiency in infrustructure and anti-flood projects.

    [03] Dispute between Pasok General secretary and ND party continues.

    The dispute between the General Secretary of the Pasok party Kostas Laliotis and the major ND opposition party related to the financing of the party by a Liberian Company continues. Commenting, the Government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas stressed that a major moral and political problem has emerged, leaving expoused the ND party while the ND party honorary President Konstantinos Mitsotakis said that Justice will atke over to resolve the case.

    [04] Latest developments on U.S led attacks on Afganistan.

    American Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld stated that attacks on Adfganistan is a war with a deadline, which, however, has not yet been set while he also announced further deployment of special ground forces in Afganistan.

    The U.S is prepared to wait two months or longer until Afgan opposition forces are ready to mount a campaign against the ruling Taliban, Richard Myers, chairman of the joint Chiefs of Staff said. In the meantime, in Afganistan, U.S warplanes pounded targets of the ruling Taliban for the 30th day, continuing a war launched on October, 7th to crush the al Qaeda network the U.S blames for the September 11 attacks that killed about 5 thousand people.

    Europeans believe that military operations in Afganistan are necessary but warned that the war could not be an end in itself, stressing that it certainly could not be the only solution to combat terrorism. Germany would have to decide this week whether to offer or not military aid in the US led operations in Afganistan. In an interview with the Times, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw described Osama bin Landen as "psychotic and paranoid" whose theology is terror. Straw warned that acts of terrorism could be carried out in the name of Osam bin Landen even after the Saudi born dissident has been captured or killed as he enjoyed a following "similar to the Nazi phenomenon".

    [05] E.U mini - summit on operations in Afganistan hosted by British Prime -minister.

    Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou said that the countries: Greece, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Ireland, Austria and Portugal not invited to attend the unofficial mini summit related to U.S attacks on Afganistan hosted by the British Prime-minister Tony Blair, will make a joint appeal at EU community level. In their appeal, the countries not invited will stress that at the present stage the feeling of the creation of a directorate did not serve to consolidate unity in the combat against terrorism and the strngthening of ties within the EU.

    [06] Antrax test positive in American consulate in Pakistan.

    The American State Department announced that first microbiology tests on a suspicious substance found in the American consulate in Pakistan tested positive on antrax bacteria.

    [07] U.N Gen. Secretary special envoy and Turkish Foreign Minister to visit Athens.

    UN General Secretary special envoy, Alvaro de Sotto is expected to arrive in Athens tomorrow following his visits to Ancara and Nicosia. Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem is also expected to arrive in Athens Tomorrow for a two-day working visit.

    Greek Government Spokesman, Hristos Protopappas has stated that Cyprus' European Union accession will be achieved as foreseen in summit decisions taken by the 15-nation bloc's leaders, in the wake of recent warnings by Ankara over possible repercussions from exactly such a prospect. The Greek government spokesman in Athens added that statements on the issue by Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and Foreign Minister Ismail Cem are diametrically opposed to United Nations decisions and resolutions regarding the long-standing Cyprus issue.

    [08] Time suitable for talks on reforms to the social security system.

    Labour and Social Insurances Minister Dimitris Reppas said on Monday, during a meeting with the Civil Servants Supreme Administrative Council's (ADEDY) presidium, the time is suitable for a solution to the social security issue to be sought. The President of the General Confederation of Greek Workers, Hristos Polyzogopoulos has proposed a flexible pension system providing eligibility for pension between the ages of 55-65 based on 35 years of work.

    [09] Next year' s budget passed by the parliament

    During yesterday's debate in parliament all political parties voted next years state budget which among others provides a 3,5% increase in deputies' salaries .

    [10] Greek Foreign Minister meets with Archbishop of Albania Anastasios.

    The Greek-Albanian relations will be examined in the meeting of Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou with Archbishop Anastasios of Albania today. Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman Panos Beglitis characterized Archbishop Anastasios as a personality with international prestige underlining his important role and work in the creation of good relations between the two countries and his participation in the dialogue among different cultures.

    [11] Athens stock market.

    On the Athens stock market yesterday, equity prices ended sharply higher reflecting strong interest for smaller capitalisation stocks. A positive trend in international bourses encouraged buying interest in the Greek market. The general index ended 2.33 percent higher at 2,590.10 points, with turnover 65.7 billion drachmas, or 192.9 million euros.

    [12] Test for the early diagnose of lung cancer.

    Scientists from the National Research Foundation are promising to succeed in developing a reliable test for the timely and authoritative diagnosis of lung cancer at a pre-clinical stage.

    The test will be in a position to detect changes in the levels of certain proteins in cells, locating pre-clinical damage one or two years before the appearance of the first clinical symptoms.

    The scientists believe that they will be able to create such a test and contribute to the struggle against lung cancer with a safe diagnosis long before serious damage to cells appears.

    The test is expected to be used initially for people prone to such a threat such as smokers.
