    [02] Manhunt for arrest of abductor

    The police has launched a manhunt for the arrest of kidnapers, who after abducting a 34-year old businesman and keeping him in their hands for two months, had his family pay them the sum of 450 million drachmas as ransom.

    [03] Klerides-Denktash face-to-face talks to begin

    During their meeting yesterday, the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides and the Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash agreed to commence face to face talks.

    Mr. Klerides has been invited for a meal at Mr. Denktash´s house in the occupied part of Cyprus today. It is the first time that a President of the Cyprus Republic crosses the green line.

    The agreement was welcomed from Athens, Ankara, Brussels and Washington, while Prime Minister described that development as progress.

    The New Democracy party also reacted positively to this development. Finally, the Cyrpus issue will be discussed between Turkish Foreign minister Bouled Ecevit and American Secretary of State Dick Powell in Ankara today.

    [04] Great changes from now till 2004 to occur says Simitis

    At a dinner hosted by the Correspondets Union of Foreign Press, Prime Minister Costas Simitis described the period from now until 2004 as one with "great changes".

    He also stated that he would lead Pasok in the next elections and that he himself would raise the issue of his succession. Mr. Simitis reitererated the government' s decision to promote structural changes and privatisations.

    He rejected Intrakom President' s proposal for a unification with the Greek Telecommunications Organisation (OTE) and stressed that the government' s proposals on the reform of the Social Secrurity System would be ready in January.

    Additionally, the Prime Minister pointed out that Labour minister Rovertos Spyropoulos had never referred to the abolishing of early retirement of women.

    In an interview with NET, Mr. Spyropoulos stated that any proposed changes would be made on the basis of the protection of motherhood.

    [05] Perez may withdraw from Israeli coalition government

    Perez may withdraw from Israeli coalition government.

    There was an explosion outside a hotel in central Jerusalem this morning-apparently caused by a suicide bomber who blew himself up. Five people were injured.

    Israel from its side is now threatening to launch new attacks against Palestinian targets if Palestinian leader does not control terrorism.

    At the same time, moderate Foreign minister Shimon Perez left open the possibility to resign and to withdraw his party from the Israeli coalition government.

    Meanwhile, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat accused Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of trying to torpedo his crackdown on terrorism with a wave of airstrikes on Palestinian cities.

    "He doesn't want me to succeed, and for this he is escalating his military activities against our towns, our cities, our establishments," the Palestinian leader told CNN television shortly after an Israeli missile exploded outside his West Bank headquarters.

    [06] Putin to visit Greece

    Six bilateral agreements will be signed by Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will be on a three-day visit to Athens on Thursday.

    The agreements will be on fuel and energy, air transportation, the establishment of cultural centers as well as, the cooperation between the Justice Ministries of the two countries, police cooperation and shipping sector cooperation.

    Mr. Putin is the first Russian President to visit Greece.

    [07] Alleged streamlining of Olympic Airways costs 1 trillion drs says Karamanlis

    New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis has accused the government of wasting 1 trillion drachmas for the streamlining of Olympic Airways, while the minister of Transport said that Mr. Karamanlis deliberately distorted reality.

    [08] Abating winds allow for ship departures

    With the winds abating, the departure of some ships from 21:00 hours will be allowed today, while departures for Crete, Chios, Mytilini, Andros, Syros and Mykonos are already taking place.

    [09] Afgan factions agree interim cabinet

    Four Afghan factions at talks in Bonn have agreed on the names for a transitional government to run the country after 20 years of war.

    The power-sharing council is to be headed by Pashtun tribal commander Hamid Karzai and will take office on 22 December, United Nations spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said. I

    n the meantime, thousands of anti-Taleban fighters prepare to attack a mountain base in eastern Afghanistan where Osama Bin Laden-accused of masterminding the 11 September attacks on the United States-is believed to be hiding.

    [10] Papageorgiou' s funeral at Zographou cemetery today

    The funeral of the 72-year old journalist Christos Papageorgiou, who died of cancer, will take place at Zographou cemetery at 16:00 local time.

    [11] Awards during World Day of Volunterism

    Today, "World Day of Volunteerism", the ministry of Health and Welfare with the Greek Radio Television will award for their offer the Hellenic Association of patients suffering from nephropathy, the association of the Childrens´ friends suffering from cancer "Elpis", the SOS Villages and the "Child´s Smile" in an event to be staged at an Athens central hotel.

    [12] 0,11% rise in ASE yesterday

    Small gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange yesterday. The General Share Price Index rose by 0.11% at 2.682,69 points, while the volume of transactions was 124 million Euro or 42 billion drachmas. Of the stocks traded yesterday, 138 recorded gains and 169 had losses, while the value of 60 stocks remained unchanged.
