    [02] Critical milestones for Greece's foreign policy drawing near

    Critical milestones for Greece's foreign policy are drawing near, Prime Minister Costantine Simitis stressed in statements following the cabinet meeting on Thursday.

    The more than four-hour cabinet meeting focused on foreign affairs and the Premier briefed the body on his visit to the United States, while Foreign Minister George Papandreou also addressed the cabinet members.

    The upcoming milestones, according to the Prime Minister, are Cyprus's European Union accession, talks for the resolution of the Cyprus problem and Turkey's accession course to the European Union.

    He stressed that all three issues were tabled by Greece in 1994 and 1998, while all this time it has been working for a resolution to the Cyprus problem.

    He added that over the next two years all these issues will have to be provided with answers and so Greece should undertake specific initiatives.

    Simitis also said that during the same period Greece would take its turn in the EU's rotating six-month presidency and the country aims at running a presidency that would in itself be a milestone for the European Union.

    He stressed that the priority of the Greek presidency will be the EU's enlargement and Cyprus's accession to the EU, which is Greece's top priority.

    Finally, within the framework of Greece' s priorities in the foreign policy sector, Mr. Simitis is beginning a tour to Balkan countries, visiting first Bulgaria.

    [03] Papandreou briefs political party leaders on his visit to the USA

    Within the framework of briefing political party leaders about his visit to the United States, Foreign minister George Papandreou is meeting with Synaspismos party President Nicos Konstantopoulos today.

    [04] Ecevit speaks of equal rights in the Aegean between Greece and Turkey

    Turkish Prime Minister described the Aegean issue as a legal question and not a political one, rejecting at the same time to take recourse to the International Court in the Hague so as to solve Turkey's differences with Greece. Mr. Ecevit also spoke of equal rights in the Aegean.

    [05] More attempts to save National-Alpha Banks merger

    Another meeting is to take place between the Governor of the National Bank of Greece and Alpha Bank Governor Giannis Kostopoulos in an attempt to merge the two banks.

    Meanwhile, government spokesman Christos Protopapas rejected rumours about the resignation of the Governor of the National Bank of Greece.

    Finally, Minister of Economy and Finance Nikolaos Christoulakis is to meet with the Prime Minister in order to talk about the course of the economy.

    Yesterday, Mr. Christodoulakis said that he expected inflation to decelerate sharply from the spring to end the year at an average rate lower than 3.4 percent in 2001.

    [06] Measures for the new meat market installations

    Measures for the housing of the Rendis meat market in new installations will be taken in the near future. At the same time the government is trying to reassure everyone that there is no threat for public health.

    According to Mr. Protopapas, European Union personnel is carrying out inspections during the last days, while measures have been taken and fines imposed to those who have broken the law.

    At the same time, new decisions will be taken as to which ministry will be responsible to carry out inspections at Rendis meat market.

    The relevant decisions will be taken during a meeting to be chaired by Minister of Development Akis Tsochatzopoulos on Monday.

    [07] PA.SO.K Central committee to meet to adopt policy for municipal elections

    In view of the imminent municipal elections, the Central committee of the ruling PA.SO.K party is meeting today to chart the policy the party is going to adopt.

    The Prime Minister will describe his party's goals during a speech to be delivered at 12:00 today.

    Meanwhile, presenting the results of MRB opinion poll company, PA.SO.K Secretary Costas Laliotis stated that the majority of the people supports the cooperation of his party with Leftist parties.

    A big percentage supports a dialogue between the ruling party and the Free Citizens Movement.

    However, from her side Secretary General of the Communist party of Greece Aleka Papariga rejected any cooperation with PA.SO.K and New Democracy parties and left open the possibility for cooperation with personages of the two big parties that have helped the popular movement.

    [08] ATHENS 2004 President to order investigation on the leaking of Olympic document

    ATHENS 2004 President Gianna Angelopoulos - Daskalaki anounced from Chania that the issue of the leaking of the document regarding the status of preparations of the Olympic projects will be examined.

    Mrs Angelopoulos - Daskalaki is touring Crete.

    At the same time, the government spokesman Christos Protopapas stated in Parliament that the information presented by the New Democracy party President Costas Karamanlis is not true.
