    [02] Farmers continue protests

    Farmers' tractors are still stationed in key road points in Thessalia and Northern Greece without however blocking traffic. Thursday is a crucial day, as the farmers will decide on their further stand after the final cotton price is announced.

    Prime Minister Kostas Simitis will visit Brussels today and will have a meeting on the issue with the European Commissioner responsible for Farming issues Franz Fishler.

    Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister George Drys accused the parties of the opposition in Parliament of betting on the farmer' s votes. In response to a question raised by deputies of the Greek communist party about the policy on farming, Mr. Drys stated that farmers will receive 561 billion drachmas, that is 62% of the overall subsidies, starting on January 16.

    Opposition New Democracy (ND) party leader Kostas Karamanlis said that his party stands by the side of the farmers and asked them to avoid blocking the national highways.

    [03] Greek consumers need not worry over dioxin infected poultry

    The Unified Body for Food Control reassured consumers that none of the dioxin-infected poultry that was found in Belgium was imported to Greece. The Body also gave assurances that market inspections continue preventively.

    On January 18, Belgian authorities traced dioxin in chicken feed in the factory producing it, and Belgian shops took 14.000 chickens off the shelves.

    [04] TEIs remain closed

    Technical Education Institutes (TEI) in Athens, Larisa, Patra, Iraklio, Mesolonghi, Thessaloniki and Piraeus remain closed, as teachers react to the way reforms in the sector are taking place.

    [05] Hospital doctors will go on strike

    Hospital doctors join the protest actions of university doctors and will hold a 48-hour strike on Thursday, for a solution to their economical and institutional demands.

    The State council will discuss the recourse of 22 university doctors who are asking that their dismissal be cancelled.

    According to information, three members of the State Council will plead that the provisions of the law forbidding the employment of university doctors in private-owned medical clinics is not contrary to the Constitution or the European human rights treaty.

    [06] Developments in Greek-Turkish issues

    Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas stated that the only dispute between Greece and Turkey is the issue of the continental shelf in the Aegean.

    It will be a positive development if Turkey accepts to draw up an agreement to refer the dispute to arbitrators by bringing the issue before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

    He added that the recent statements by Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem are different from earlier Turkish positions that displayed intransigence.

    Mr. Protopapas stated that there will be exploratory discussions at a Foreign Ministries directors level to determine if there can be headway in this area within the framework of International Law and the European institutions. He also said that Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou will also have exploratory contacts with his Turkish counterpart if it is deemed necessary.

    [07] Construction of rowing facilities in Schinias

    The State Council gave the "green light" for one more Olympic work, that is the construction of a rowing facilities in the region of Schinias in Marathonas, thus rejecting a relative recourse of the Archaeological Association and the Greek Environment Protection Society.

    [08] Tax deductions for electronic income tax returns

    Taxpayers who will be submitting their income tax returns electronically will be receiving a tax deduction of up to 40.000 drachmas.

    [09] Athens Stock Exchange

    On Monday, stabilizing tendencies dominated in the Athens Stock Exchange session. Gains were recorded in the ASE with the general index at +0.25% reaching 2.624,46 points, while the volume of transactions was at 137.4 million Euro corresponding to 46.8 billion drachmas.

    Of the stocks trading yesterday, 189 recorded gains and 120 had losses, while the value of 50 stocks remained unchanged.
