[03] Intense verbal clash between the Pasok and the ND party
A war of words between the government and the main opposition ND party
heated up over the weekend when Prime-minister Simitis implied that
democracy could be in danger, following unsubstantiated suggestions
that East German funds may have been channeled to the ruling Pasok
party. The Prime-minister slammed the ND party for creating what he
described as a climate of instability and warned all those who
cultivate such climate that they will pay for the consequences.
However, he ruled out the possibility for early elections and said
government work was the best response to the campaign to undermine
political life.
[04] Speaking to the ruling PASOK party deputies from south-central
Greece Prime-minister
Simitis said that the ND party is the most "conservative establishment"
representing the neo-liberal recipe, which wants to transform the
society of citizens into a society of the market. Government spokesman,
Hristos Protoppas also attacked the ND party, charging that its stance
was adding to efforts to destabilise politics and democratic
institutions. He also said that the government expects fresh attacks
from the mass media, vested interests aiming at the 3rd Community
support framework as well as from the ND party. Commenting, the leader
of the ND party, Kostas Karamanlis said that those who promote
polarization and division consciensciously harm the country and lose
their seriousness. On his part, the President of the Coalition of the
Left and Progress party, Nikos Konstantopoulos said that the Pasok and
ND party are creating a fabricated polarization in their struggle for
power.
[05] Greek-flagged freighter sank off the coast of Skyros
A Greek-flagged freighter on route to Crete from Kavala-sank early
yesterday morning off the Coast of Skyros Island, probably due to
movement of cargo inside the vessel. The 60-year old wife of the
captain died on the way to hospital, while the second mate is still
missing. The remaining 8 crew members were rescued by coast guard
helicopters.
[06] First contract for the construction of the Athens suburban railway
signed
The ministerial committee for the Olympiad chaired by Prime-minister
Simitis convenes this morning. The first contract for the construction
of the suburban railway connecting the Aharnon railway sation with the
Athens international airport Eleftherios Venizelos was signed
yesterday. The suburban railway, part of a wider network, will
facilitate increased passenger movement during the 2004 Athens
Olympics, beyond easing daily travel for commuters. A station will be
built at the Olympic Stadium north of Athens.
[07] The current stage of the project is due for completion in 18
months
Employees of the Olympic Airways Company are expected to present their
stand over the governments plan for the modernization of the national
air carrier today. Run-off elections will be held next Sunday for the
election of Presidents of the Athens, Pireus and Thessaloniki Bar
Associations as none of the candidates won the majority of votes.
[08] Classical civilization-Idea or reality exhibition opens in Berlin
on Friday under the auspices of Greek and German Prime-ministers
One hundred and thirteen exhibits from 12 Greek museums are included in
an exhibition entitled "Classical Civilization-Idea or reality", which
will open on Friday in Berlin, under the auspices of Greek Prime
Minister Costas Simitis and his German counterpart Gerhard Schroeder.
Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos announced the Friday opening in
Athens on Monday, stressing that the exhibition in Berlin coincides
with the decision of the German government to temporarily return to
Greece parts of the Ancient Olympia Philippeion building, adding that
this decision was "in contrast to the decision of the British
government to keep the Parthenon Marbles in the British Museum".
[09] Public prosecutor ordered preliminary inquiry into Kathimerini
publishing group investment in ocean-going shipping
An initiative by the publishing group, Kathimerini and its owner
Aristidis Alafouzos, to invest money rose on the stock market in
ocean-going shipping, rather than publishing, has taken on judicial
dimensions. An Athens public prosecutor has ordered a preliminary
enquiry to determine whether the investment by Mr. Alafouzos-which
violates bourse regulations-constitutes fraud at the expense of
investors. Addressing parliament earlier this year, the president of
the association of stock exchange members had described investments
into ocean-going shipping as high risk.
