    Sunny today in most parts of the country, with scattered cloud in the west and north. Winds south, southwesterly, light to moderate. Sunshine in Athens with temperatures between 9C and 23C. Scattered cloud in Thessaloniki with temperatures from 7C to 20C.

    [03] Government plans to speed up dialogue on reforms in the social security system

    The government plans to accelerate the dialogue on reforms in the social security system. According to reports, Labour Minister, Dimitris Reppas will meet with representatives of the General Confederation of Greek workers and Employers unions tomorrow while he is expected to send letter-invitations to social partners to announce the framework of principals proposed by the government to initiate the dialogue on reforms in the social security system.

    In the meantime, the Labour Ministry will today announce two programs for the creation of 19 thousand job positions of 18 month duration in the private sector.

    [04] Electoral law will not change for the 2004 parliamentary elections

    Interior Minister, Kostas Skandalidis stressed that the 2004 parliamentary elections will be held under the present electoral law while the dialogue for the new electoral law which will provide for broader coalitions- will start after the municipal elections in October from a zero basis.

    Mr. Skandalidis made an appeal to all political forces to shield the trustworthiness of politics while he also spoke of forces who either intended to change the Greek political life into the Italian political life style or aimed at early elections.

    The President of the ND party, Kostas Karamanlis ruled out any possibility for change of the electoral law while in an interview with the newspaper "Sunday Avgi" he said he did not see the possibility of early elections.

    [05] Prime-minister Simitis on an official visit to Japan

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis yesterday arrived in Tokyo, Japan for an official visit. Today the Greek premier will be received by the Emperor of Japan Akihito and will hold talks with his Japanese counterpart Junichiro Koizumi.

    Mr.Simitis is expected to address a forum of the External Trade of Japan.

    Mr. Simitis is accompanied by Press and Mass Media Minister Christos Protopapas and Alternate Foreign Minister Tassos Yiannitsis, as well as by a team of Greek businessmen and bankers.

    [06] Meeting of Greek Foreign Minister with Russian Foreign Ministry special envoy

    Foreign Minister George Papandreou will meet with Russian Federation Foreign Ministry special envoy for S.E. Europe Vladimir Chizhov, in Athens today.

    [07] FYROM double name solution feasible this year

    In an interview with the newspaper "To Vima tis Kuriakis", the President of FYROM Boris Traikofsky maintained that the solution of the double name for Fyrom was feasible even within this year.

    [08] Rublish colectors begin strike today

    Rubbish collectors working in the Athens Municipality began a 48-hour strike today. The Interior Ministry has taken the case to the Justice Ministry seeking to declare the strike illegal.

    Athens University professors have suspended operation of the university till Friday within the framework of mobilisations for the solution of their demands related to pension and salary issues.

    [10] Greek athletes won two medals in Vienna

    Two medals were won by the Greek athletes in Vienna yesterday at the European indoor track and field championships. In her final attempt, Niki Xanthou jumped a length of 6,74 metres winning the gold medal in the long-jump, while sprinter, Georgia Kokloni came third in the 60m dash , with a time of 7.22 seconds.

    [11] M.E, Israeli troops kill three Palestinians

    In the ME, Israeli troops shot dead three Palestinians during a raid into a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip just hours after Israel' s security cabinet decided to intensify military action after a rash of deadly attacks that killed 21 Israelis in 24 hours.

    Sharons government blames Yaser Arafat for the suicide bomb attacks although the Palestinian leader had condemned the terrorist attacks in Jerusalem.

    Israeli curbs on Yaser Arafat' s movement must be lifted so the Palestinian leader can attend an Arab summit that will discuss Saudi peace proposals said European Union Foreign policy chief Xavie Solana yesterday.

    [12] Swiss agree to join the U.N

    Swiss voters abondoned centuries of political isolationism and narrowly agreed that their staunchly neutral country should join the UN.
