[02] Avramopoulos suspends the operation of his party

Athens Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos, founder and president of the Movement of Free Citizens (KEP) party, on Tuesday announced his decision to suspend the operation of his party and its tranformation into a Movement of Political Reflection and Intervention.

Mr Avramopoulos announced the official creation of his party in March 2001 and was elected party leader at the KEP Founding Congress in Thessaloniki, in November 2001.

He gave as reasons for his decision what he called ''the suffocating frame of polarisation'' and financial difficulties.

Mr Avramopoulos avoided to elaborate on his future plans.

From his side, government spokesman Christos Protopapas attributed the deadlock of Mr Avramoulos’ party to the lack of policy and programming and inability to intervene in serious problems

New Democracy spokesman Theodoris Roussopoulos stated that his party would evaluate the new developments, while New Democracy Honorary President Costas Mitsotakis stated that Mr Avramopoulos’ position was with the main opposition party.

Finally, Synaspismos party Press official Nikos Voutsis described the creation and liquidation of political parties for the country’s political life on the basis of polls and personal policies a sad phenomenon.

    [03] Simitis,Aznar discuss crucial issues

Prime Minister Costas Simitis discussed the issue of the European army with his Spanish counterpart Jose Maria Aznar on Tuesday. Both men stated that they were optimistic over a settlement of the issue.

Aznar referred to the Seville summit on June 20-21 and its agenda. In his view, the most important issue is the adoption of a common European policy on immigration and asylum. Another issue discussed was the Euro army issue.

Regarding the issue of illegal immigration to Greece, Mr Simitis stated that a border guards force should be set up, while referring to the European army issue he stated that discussions continued so as a mutually accepted solution could be found. Mr Aznar stressed that he was neither optimistic nor pessimistic, hoping that a solution would be found in the immediate future.

On a relative development, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis, who is in the USA met with American Vice President Dick Chenney and Secretary of State Colin Powel to whom he expressed his disagreement with the Ankara text regarding the European army issue.

However, the American side described the text as “very good” and reiterated that the issue should be solved by the European Union.
