    Partly cloudy throughout Greece on Thursday with a chance of afternoon rain in the central and northern parts of the country. Northerly winds, moderate to strong on the Aegean. Temperatures between 17C to 28C on the mainland, 21C to 31C on the islands.

    Partly cloudy in Athens with a chance of afternoon showers, 24C to 31C. The same for Thessaloniki, 20C to 27C.

    [02] Government to examine tax reform and illegal immigration framework

    A government committee will examine today the basic framework of the tax reform and illegal immigration.

    The first packet of measures of the tax reform will concern the simplification of the Code and Data Book and will be announced most possibly next week.

    The second packet will be announced in mid July and will concern changes in the taxation of real estate. The third will include changes in income taxation and will be announced at the end of July.

    [03] Salary rises of civil servants will depend on the economy&#8217;s capabilities

    Rises in civil servants&#8217; salaries will depend on the capabilities of the Greek economy, the convergence programme and the process of collective negotiations. This was stated by Interior Minister Costas Scandalides following his meeting with Prime Minister Costas Simitis.

    In tandem, Mr Scandalides rejected information according to which he clashed with Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis about the resources to be allocated to the civil servants&#8217; salaries, bit added that there was just some disagreement on the procedure.

    The government&#8217;s target is the exchange of views on the beginning of collective negotiations with the civil servants&#8217; board and to promote an effective Public Administration stated the government spokesman.

    [04] According to OECD, growth rate in Greece to reach 4.25% in 2003

    According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD the growth rate of the Greek economy will reach 4.25% in 2003, advising the Greek government to be stricter with pubic expenditure, proceed to a faster de-escalation of the public debt as well as to the release of markets.

    [05] WorldCom faces fraud charge

    The US financial watchdog, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has begun a fraud action against US telecommunications giant WorldCom

    The company has admitted that its profits had been inflated by $3.8bn (£2.5bn) between January 2001 and March 2002.

    President George W Bush has condemned the fraud as "outrageous" and vowed to address the problems shaking corporate America.

    Analysts predicted that WorldCom would file for bankruptcy before the end of week, after it announced 17,000 redundancies and sacked its chief financial officer, Scott Sullivan.

    [06] Simitis to meet IOC President today

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis will meet with IOC President Dennis Oswald today, who came to Athens to assess the preparation status of the Olympic projects.

    Meanwhile, Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos described the results of the Biministerial Coordination Commission of the Olympic Preparation with Mr Oswald as absolutely positive.

    [07] Public hospitals on strike

    Public hospitals will operate on skeleton staff today and tomorrow due to the 48-hour strike of hospital doctors, while Social Insurance Institute doctors will go on a strike tomorrow.

    [08] Sailors&#8217; pensions to be settled soon

    The Mercantile Minister reiterated that a draft-bill will be soon tabled at Parliament that will be settling the sailors&#8217; pensions. Meanwhile, Panhellenic Sailors Federation is examining the possibility of taking recourse to the State Council, asking it declare the political mobilisation as illegal and anti-constitutional.

    [09] Four agreements signed between Greece and Kazakstan

    The President of the Hellenic Republic Costis Stephanopoulos&#8217; visit to Kazakstan was sealed with a packet of four economic agreements verifying the closer cooperation between Greece and Kazakstan for the operation o the Bourgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline.

    [10] Vartholomeos arrives in Volos

    Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos arrived in the town of Volos, eastern Greece, on Wednesday at the invitation of the University of Thessaly and will be proclaimed an honourary lecturer on Thursday night.

    Vartholomeos arrived at Anchialos military airport and was welcomed by Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos, the Metropolitan of Dimitriada Ignatios and local authorities.

    Apart from being proclaimed an honourary lecturer at the university, the Ecumenical Patriarch will also be inaugurating pupils' holiday camps and return to Istanbul on Friday.

    [11] Papandreou to brief Bakoyianni on Euro force issue

    Foreign Minister Yorgos Papandreou will brief New Democracy party MP Dora Bakoyianni on the Euro force issue. Yesterday, he briefed the Secretary General of the Greek Communist party Aleka Papariga and Synaspismos party leader Nicos Constantopoulos on the same issue. Mrs Papariga stated that the issue was not resolved for the benefit of Greece, while Mr Constantopoulos said various interpretations of texts regarding the Euro force issue would follow.
