    A mainly fine weather is forecast in most parts of the country today with a possibility of rain or storms on high ground. Northerly winds, weak in the west and moderate to strong in the east.

    Temperatures in Athens will range between 23C to 33C and in Thessaloniki between 21C to 32C.

    [02] Cyprus army , air-force commanders killed in helicopter crash

    The commanders of the Cypriot army and air-force, Brigadier-General, Evangelos Florakis , air-force chief Stylianos Demenegas and the three pilots of a Bell 206 helicopter were killed in an early morning crash near a village close to the western town of Paphos.

    They were in a national guard helicopter participating in a night military exercise when the helicopter fell and crashed under circumstances which are yet unknown. The Bell 206 helicopter had set off from the capital, Nicosia at 4.20a.m &#8211; 0120GMT and last made contact with air-traffic controllers at 4.55a.m- 0155GMT.

    [03] DNA tests on November 17 evidence

    Greek police- ELAS &#8211; are expected today to release information following a careful examination of documents uncovered in the past week in raids on two November 17 safehouses in the Athens suburbs of Patisia and Pagrati .

    According to reports alleged DNA tests completed so far placed the suspect, Savvas Xiros &#8211;detained after a failed bomb attack in Pireus-at the scene of a rocket attack on the German ambassador s residence in Athens in May 1999.

    Late last night Savvas Xiros was transferred to a specially equipped ward on the 10th floor of the Evangelismos hospital.

    Press Minister, Hristos Protopappas yesterday repeated that investigation procedures were held in accordance with the constitution and state laws denied media reports about arrests saying that in the case of any arrests the public will be briefed by the responsible authorities.

    Responding to a question related to the questioning of Savvas Xiros former wife and his 11-uear old son , Mr Protopappas said that his son was never summoned and questioned by the police. The government spokesman described the release of Savvas Xiros photograph by a television channel , as a mistake and an act that flagrantly violates journalism ethics and called on the Radio and Television Council to intervene.

    Greek Commercial banks have begun an examination of bank accounts which belong to 28 organizations involved in terrorist acts following an instruction by the E.U Council to all E.U member states given on June 17th.

    In the meantime, no organization has claimed responsibility so far for the bomb explosion opposite the headquarters of the Hellas Flying Dolphin ticket office in Pireus last night. The make-shift bomb was placed in a garbage bin at the back of the building housing the company s offices and damaged shop fronts but caused no deaths or injuries

    In its statement , the N.D party said that only the arrest of the November 17 masterminds and their accomplices will give the final blow to the terrorist organization.

    Archibishop of America Demetrios, who visited President Bush yesterday said that the American President appeared satisfied over the recent developments related to the combat of the November 17 organization.

    [04] Immediate compensation to flood victims in Renti and Moshato

    Environment and Public Works Minister , Vaso Papandreou who visited the flood hit suburbs of Renti and Moshato yesterday announced the granting of a 200 thousand drs sum to flood-victims to cover their immediate household needs .She also announced that the Interior Ministry will allocate 40 million drs to the municipalities of Renti and Moshato .Mrs Papandreou also said that the old sewage system mistakes ,omissions in the past and illegal building were the reasons of the late flooding.

    [05] Electric power linkage between Greece and Italy

    Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and his Italian counterpart Silvio Berlusconi yesterday inaugurated the electric power network linkage between Greece and Italy with satellite connections from their offices.

    The project, constituting Greece's first electric power linkage with the other European Union countries via Italy, concerns an underwater cable 163 kilometres long, submerged in the Ionian and Adriatic seas, and was the reason for the double celebration taking place simultaneously in Greece and Italy.
