[02] Combat against terrorism continues

During a meeting with Attica top Police officials yesterday, the Anti-terrorist Service Commander Stelios Syros described Dimitris Koufodinas as extremely dangerous. At the same time it was decided that additional measures be taken for the guarding of police stations.

In the meantime, following the Public Prosecutor’s decision, the 14 “November 17” members that have been imprisoned will have access to the Press from now on so as to be able to be briefed.

[03] Optimism on solution of Kos arms theft mystery

The government is optimistic that the mystery of the Kos arms theft will be solved by the end of the week. Although the investigations were still in the dark last night, the relevant ministers of National Defence and Public Order consider it a question of time until the culprits directly connected to the unit (serving or cooperating with individuals serving there), who come from the arms smuggling sector, are traced. Similar statements were made by Defence Deputy Minister Dimitris Apostolakis to NET 105.8.

Meanwhile, New Democracy party MPs Dimitris Sioufas, Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Spilios Spilitopoulos have asked from the Defence Minister to be briefed on the cases of weaponry thefts at military units.

[04] Drop of unemployment to 9.6%

Unemployment fell to 9.6 percent in the second quarter of 2002 from 10.2 percent in the same period a year earlier, and 10.9 percent in the first quarter of this year, the National Statistics Service (NSS) said on Tuesday.

The total number of jobless in the second quarter was 420,100, with unemployment among men falling to 6.2 percent from 6.7 percent in the same period of 2001; and among women to 14.6 percent from 15.4 percent, the NSS said.

Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis told reporters that the decline in joblessness was major, but no reason for complacency.

''The battle against unemployment must continue,'' the minister added.

[05] Christodoulakis asks for price restraint

Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis on Tuesday asked tourism enterprises to exercise price restraint.

After a meeting with the Panhellenic Federaton of Hoteliers and representatives of travel agencies, Christodoulakis also expressed concern over stubborn inflation, whose failure to decline was hurting competitiveness of the economy.

At the same time, the Development Ministry is carrying out checks on petrol stations after it has been discovered that some petrol station owners have increased petrol prices excessively.
