Temperatures in Athens will range between 18C to 27C and in Thessaloniki between 15C to 23C.(17/9/2002 12:10:00 μμ) [02] Domestic fight against terrorismJailed November 17 suspect, Savvas Xiros –whose arrest in June triggered the capture of a further 15 alleged members of the urban guerilla group- speaking by phone to a Greek private television channel said that there are another 10 to 15 of his comrades out but he would not reveal any information on their whereabouts.The Council of the Koridallos prison last night decided to limit telephone contacts of the arrested November 17 suspects only with members of their families and their lawyers and partially or completely ban telephone contacts of those violating this rule. In the meantime, Savvas Xiros allegations that he was interrogated under the influence of drugs and pshychological pressure has given rise to strong reactions by the politicians, scientists and judicial authorities while the Health Minister stressed that there were no such drugs which could change a person s views. Commenting on Xiros allegations, government spokesman , Hristos Protopappas said that he was making up stories adding that the government does not hold dialogues with terrorists. American President , George Bush, in a letter to Prime-minister Simitis , hails Greece s contribution in the combat of terrorism . (17/9/2002 12:11:00 μμ) [03] Greek economy prepared to overcome military intervention in IraqFollowing a meeting yesterday with Prime-minister Simitis, Economy Minister, Nikos Hristodoulakis assured that Greek economy is prepared to overcome a possible military action against Iraq . Mr. Hristodoulakis said that the top priorities at present were the maintenance of the high rate of growth, reduction of public debt and the speeding up of the privatisation program and structural changes.(17/9/2002 12:12:00 μμ) [04] Greek Foreign Minister meets American counterpart in N.YGreek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou met with American Secretary of State Collin Powell in N.Y yesterday. They discussed the Cyprus issue, the fight against terrorism, Greek-Turkish relations , the situation in Iraq and the M.E in what was described as a very constructive meeting.In the meantime , during their meeting in Konstantinopolis, Greek Defence Minister, Yiannos Papantoniou and his Turkish counterpart Sabahattin Cakmakoglou agreed to open soon a telephone hotline as part of trust building steps between two NATO allies. Greek Defence Minister, Yiannos Papantoniou said at a meeting in Konstantinopolis also attended by ministers from Bulgaria and Romania that the hotline would contribute to avoiding tensions. (17/9/2002 12:13:00 μμ) [05] European Transport WeekEvents have been organised and some measures taken to mark the European Transport Week , established by the E.U this year.Transport Minister, Hristos Verelis said that the traffic problem could not be solved unless we all realise that priority should be given to mass transport. Mr. Verelis also said that additional cameras would be installed in the streets to convince motorists that bus lanes should not be used by private cars. (17/9/2002 12:14:00 μμ) [06] Mass boycott brought prices down by 30%According to the Consumers Institute, demand for fruit and vegetables dropped by 40% to 60% during the first day yesterday of the 4-day mass boycott on fruit and vegetables.The Ministry of Development has recorded a 30 % in retail prices compared to last Friday. In the meantime, open-market vendors are staging a rally in front of the Economics Ministry this morning .
