[02] New budget to be tabled on November 19

The Greek economy would grow by 3.8 per cent in 2003 and inflation would fall to 2.5 per cent by the end of that year, according to revised estimates presented by Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis on Thursday, after the cabinet approved a new draft budget prepared by his ministry for the coming year.

The new budget will now be tabled in Parliament on November 19.

For the first time, the budget will include 3 new chapters that will be related to the development of the province, small and medium size enterprises and regional development.

The new draft budget includes a package of measures to limit and contain public-sector spending. According to Christodoulakis, the reduction in inflation will be achieved by restraining rate hikes by public utilities over the coming year.

[05] San Giuliano di Puglia mourns 24 until now

Rescue teams at San Giuliano di Puglia saved an eight-year old boy this morning from the ruins of the school that collapsed following yesterday’s earthquake. The boy survived under the ruins for about 16 hours, while rescue teams are trying to save 10 more children and a teacher who is believed to be trapped in the school ruins.

Out of the 62 people trapped in the ruins 58 were children aged about six. Meanwhile, the dead from the earthquake reached 24 among which 22 are children. According to the local authorities the homeless have reached 3,000, since 70% of the homes in round the epicentre of the earthquake were destroyed.

At the same time, the Italian government has declared San Giuliano di Puglia in a state of emergency, while Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who visted hospitalised children in Larino and Termoli, spoke of a tragedy.

Meanwhile, 400 families that remained homeless due to the eruption of Etna in Sicily, received 15 million euros from the Italian government. It should be noted that seismologists do not connect yesterday’s earthquake with the eruption of Etna.

Referring to a possible relation between the seismic activity in Italy and Greece, seismologist Akis Tselendis stated to NET 105.8 that there is no relation, adding that there are many areas in Greece that can be hit by an earthquake. However, we cannot be sure of anything Mr Tselendis said.
