    [02] Cyprus issue

Greek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou had talks yesterday with White House national security adviser, Condoleeza Rice and will meet with Secretary of State, Colin Powell today. He is also scheduled to visit Turkey on December 4.

In Washingthon, Mr. Papandreou told reporters that Cyprus would be admitted to the E.U even without the resolution of the Cyprus issue, however, clarifying that the European Commission has worked out a special protocol for the extension of the European community s status to the occupied parts of Cyprus when the Cyprus political issue was resolved.

European Union Commissioner, responsible for the block s enlargement, Gynder Ferghoiwen said that Cyprus would be admitted to the union regardless of any developments at the E.U summit meeting in Copenhagen, adding that the U.N peace plan offered Turkish-Cypriots a historical opportunity which might not emerge in the future.

In the meantime, Turksih-Cypriot leader Raulf Dektash said more time was needed to study the U.N document, a report conflicting information that he would be positively responding to the proposal within the next few days. Today, Mr. Dektash will meet in N.Y with American Undersecretary of State, Mark Grossman and White House special coordinator for Cyprus Tomas Weston.

To add to the confusion, the winner of the recent Turkish elections Tayip Erdogan reiterated ysterday in Helsinsky that the plan was negotiable, while the Turkish opposition leader stated that it required serious and radical amendments.

In a related development, the U.S former special envoy for Cyprus, Richard Holbrook yesterday launched a strong attack on Dektash, charging that he was not serving the real interests of the Turkish-Cypriots adding that his behaviour was creating a risk of the European Union saying no to Ancara s accession aspirations.

In Athens, goverment spokesman, Hristos Protopappas said that there was time for negotiations on the basis of the U.N plan even after the E.U summit in Copenhagen.
