[02] Cyprus issue enters new phase of negotiations
A few days before the Copenhagen Summit meeting, the Cyprus issue has
entered a new phase of intensive negotiations under the United Nations
aegis. United Nations special envoy Alvaro de Soto met yesterday with
the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides, while today he
is meeting with the Turkish-Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash.
Meanwhile, in Athens, the government has reiterated that it would not
accept any connection between the solution of the Cyprus issue and
Cyprus' accession to the European Union.
At the same time, in an interview with the newspaper Kyriakatiki
Eleftherotypia, Foreign Minister George Papandreou stated that if
Greece was forced it would veto any EU decision on its enlargement and
it would not have to be blamed.
