    Local cloud, turning to showers and storms, and some snowfall, are expected in Greece on Tuesday.

    Cloud is expected in western, central and northern Greece and the islands of the eastern Aegean on Tuesday, turning locally to rain, and to storms in the west. The temperature in Athens will range from 10 to17 C and in Thessaloniki from 7 to12 C.

    [02] De Soto to visit Cyprus

    All members of United Nations envoy Alvaro De Soto are in Cyprus, waiting from Mr De Soto, who will return to Cyprus on January 13, after he first visits Athens and Ankara.

    Today, the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots' Technical Committees will meet at the United Nations office at the Nicosia airport.

    Meanwhile in Ankara, New Deomocracy party leader Costas Karamanlis and the winner of the Turkish elections Tayeep Erdogan discussed Greek Turkish relations, the Cyprus issue and Turkey's European prospects yesterday.

    Mr Karamanlis stated that although Greece supports Turkey's European orientation, this county will have to meet all European Union criteria, adding that a solution of the Cyprus issue will be found provided some improvements on the Annan plan are made so that the this solution is viable and effective.

    From his side, Mr Erdogan stated that the solution of the Cyprus issue would be found from the new generation of Turkish politicians, asking at the same time Greece's active support for Turkey's European course, now that it presides in the European Union.

    Meanwhile, in the pre-election campaign for the presidential elections, due to be held on February 16, began in Cyprus with Attorney General Alekos Markides insisting for his candidacy.

    At the same time, Mr Markides expressed his wish to remain in Mr Glafkos Klerides' negotiating team that would deal with the political solution of the Cyprus issue.

    [03] Simitis optimistic about the Greek economy

    On his way to the annual reception hosted by the Athens Chamber of Commerce Industry, Prime Minister Costas Simitis forecast high growth rates for the Greek economy in 2003 that would contribute the convergence with other European Union countries.

    Although the Greek economy is within a difficult international environment, in contrast to other countries it has a high growth rate, stressing that &#8220;this means investments, drop of unemployment and more resources for social policy&#8221;.

    [04] Earthquake hits the sea area near Killini

    Referring to the earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale that took place 220 kilometres west of Athens in the sea area between Killini and Vartholomio at 03:15 today, the Manager of the Athens Geodynamic institute Giorgos Stavrakakis described it a normal development and a smooth post earthquake activity.
