    [02] Key developments on Iraq crisis

    All political party leaders called for a peaceful resolution of the Iraq crisis during a pre agenda debate at party leaders level in parliament yesterday .

    Prime-minister Simitis said that Greece is against war and respects the1441 UN resolution underlining that any initiative should be based on UN resolutions.

    The General Secretary of the Greek Communist party Aleca Papariga said that the goverment has already got involved into war with while the President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress, Nikos Konstantopoulos stressed that the war against Iraq should be prevented because it is a sole decision of the US administration which is trying to impose it on the EU and the UN.

    In repply ,Prime-minister, Kostas Simitis said that Greece determines its position according to its own interests while he ruled out the dispatch of Greek troops to Iraq.

    American Secretary of State ,Collin Powel and Greek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou underlined that Sadan Housein should comply with the 1441 UN resolution following their 1.30 meeting at the White House attended also by EU foreign affairs chief , Xavie Solana , and the EU foreign affairs commissioner Chris Paten.

    In the meantime, the US dismissed Bagda s agreement to destroy its al-Samoud 2 missiles and pressed on with its war preparations , deploying a sixth aircraft carrier and B-2 stealth bombers.

    The American and Russian Presidents have agreed to jointly work for the resolution of the Iraq crisis to the benefit of the world community within the framework of the UN efforts.

    During yesterday s meeting of the UN Security Council, the French ambassador said that the council discussion showed that a majority of the members think that the time has not come to go to war.

    According to a poll conducted by the Daily Telegraph newspaper, supporters of the British Labor party have dropped to 35% compared to 42% in the 2001 elections objecting to its stance on the crisis in Iraq and it failure to improve public services.

    Developments in the Iraq crisis and news about drop in American oil reserves have led oil prices up to $ 39.99 per barrel.
