The temperature in Athens will range from 11 to 20C and in Thessaloniki from 9 to 17C.(22/4/2003 11:59:00 נל) [02] Simitis supports transparencyThe government defends legality and transparency and stands rock firm against corruption, which it refuses to come to terms with or cover up, Prime Minister Costas Simitis stressed on Monday regarding the latest round of allegations of graft targeting MPs and government members.He was referring to a recent spate of articles published by the Athens newspaper ''Avriani'' which made allegations about suspicious dealings between one minister and a company that won a lucrative government contract and raised questions about the large gains made by certain ministers and MPs on the stock market. Earlier, the Press Minister had called on all who are in possession of evidence to testify to the Public Prosecutor. Meanwhile, the Minister of Justice has called the Public Prosecutor of the Supreme Court of Appeal to examine the charges launched by the newspaper 'Avriani', while the New Democracy party is accusing the government of adopting a Pilate-like policy. (22/4/2003 12:00:00 לל) [03] Sars spread causes alertMedical authorities all over the world are on the alert to deal with Sars (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which is spreading rapidly. Up to now, 225 people have lost their lives all over the world, while the people suffering from the illness number over 4,000 in 25 countries.Meanwhile, the Disease Control Centres in the USA reported that 38 'possible' cases of people suffering from Sars and 187 'suspected' cases of Sars, 225 cases in total. Additionally, 14 deaths caused by the Sars virus were reported mainly in Ontario, Canada, while specialized American scientists are arriving in Toronto today to examine why doctors and medical personnel get infected by the virus despite wearing masks, uniforms and gloves. At the same time, most Hong Kong secondary school pupils returned to class on Tuesday following a three-week closure of their schools because of the Sars outbreak. About 200,000 children from around 400 schools went back to class, although 10 schools refused to open. Finally, all health centres in Greece are on the alert, while according to Health Minister Costas Stephanis, who gave an interview with NET 105.8, the virus had not been detected yet in Greece, assuring that Greece is in contact with the World Health Organisation. (22/4/2003 12:01:00 לל) [04] Simitis in HelsinkiPrime Minister Costas Simitis, who is presiding presently the EU, visited Helsinki, Finland yesterday within the framework of the Summit Meeting due to be held in Thessaloniki in June.Today, Mr Simitis is meeting with his Finnish counterpart and then he will visit Stockholm and Copenhagen. Among the issues to be discussed will be Iraq, migration and other European issues. (22/4/2003 12:02:00 לל) [05] Turkish Cypriots open access to Greek Cypriot part of CyprusThe authorities in the breakaway Turkish north of Cyprus have announced that they will open access to the Greek Cypriot part of the island after nearly 30 years of enforced separation.Turkish Cypriots will be able to go over the border, which is expected to be opened on Wednesday, for day-long crossings. The move coincides with a series of confidence-building measures announced by the Greek-led Cypriot Government after the collapse of peace talks last month. Meanwhile, the Cypriot government is promoting a constitutional reform that will put an end to the separation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
