    [02] Support measures for Turkish-Cypriots

The Cyprus government today is expected to announce a package of measures to support Turkish-Cypriots following a cabinet meeting yesterday while there are plans for a joint May Day celebration after 46 years.

Thousands of Greek and Turkish Cypriots continue to cross the U.N guarded green line between the two communities after Turkish Cypriot leader, Raulf Dektash last week allowed day trips over the north and south crossing for the first time since the island was divided by the Turkish occupation forces nearly 30 years ago.

In the meantime,in a bid to boost confidence , following the collapse of Cyprus peace talks last month, the Dektash regime has further relaxed restrictions allowing Greek-Cypriots to stay 3-days in the northern occupied part of Cyprus. However, he said any settlement of Greek-Cypriots in the northern part of Cyprus would give rise to bloody clashes.

Turkey also vowed to step up efforts to restart talks on reuniting Cyprus , as Brussels has pointed out that a peace deal would play a major role in Ankara s own candidacy for EU membership.

Greek-prime-minister, Kostas Simitis, the Cyprus President, Tasos Papadopoulos and the E.U welcomed the confidence building measures but warned they should not be regarded as a substitute for a comprehensive peace deal on the divided island due to join the EU in May 2004.

The Coalition of the Left and Progress party said that free trafficking of Greek and Turkish Cypriots indicated that the two communities can coexist within the frame of a reunited Cyprus.
