[02] Hopes for more survivors fade in Turkey

Hopes fade for the survival of more pupils at Bingol, southeastern Turkey. According to the authorities, the dead have reached 127, the injured 537, while thousands are homeless.

Meanwhile, calm seems to have prevailed at Bingol, following yesterday's incidents that broke out between the police and angry civilians, who asked for help from the authorities. However, police forces are still in front of the prefecture building, where the incidents took place yesterday.

The government has removed the police chief, while the Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan stated that the police shouldn't have acted in that way.

[03] Council of Foreign Ministers meeting ends Friday

The European Union's informal two-day Council of Foreign Ministers got underway on the island of Rhodes on Friday, focusing primarily on the Middle East issue and the reconstruction of Iraq.

Regarding Iraq's reconstruction process, Papandreou spoke of two common positions in the EU's ranks concerning the next steps to be taken and the need for the UN to issue a mandate on the legalisation of the transitional status in Baghdad.

''We gave Mr. Patten the green light to prepare the humanitarian aid issues and the role of the European Union in the effort for the reconstruction of Iraq,'' Papandreou said.

The foreign minister added that on the part of the ''25'' there is the intention of their charge d'affaires' returning to Baghdad.

[04] Simitis tries to reverse negative government climate

In an attempt to reverse the negative climate against the government during the last days about scandals concerning government officials, Prime Minister Costas Simitis announced that the government would take political initiatives following its EU Presidency.

He also stressed that the government would not adopt the same climate of crisis created by some, while in an interview with NET 105.8, Press Deputy Minister Tilemachos Chitiris did not rule out a government reshuffle, excluding however the possibility of early elections.

From his side, the New Democracy party President Costas Karamanlis accused the government of state insufficiency, lack of social state and of being unable to control corruption. He also stated that his party would not accept any change on the electoral law.

Finally, Synaspismos party leader Nikos Constantopoulos maintained that the government has no more potential to continue its work, while PASOK party MP Pantelis Tsertikides will be sworn in Deputy Public Order Minister on Monday.
