    A sunny and warm day is forecast in most parts of the country with only some scattered cloud in the west. Winds northerly light to moderate turning strong locally in thesouthern Aegean . Temperatures in Athens will range between 16 C to 30 C and in Thessaloniki between 15C and 28 C.

    [02] WHO extends travel warnings

    Japan is to send four experts to China on Sunday to help the country battle the SARS virus which has killed 500 people and infected over 7 thousand worldwide, mostly in Asia.

    The World Health Organisation extended its SARS related travel warning to two more provinces in China, the province of Tianjin and Inner Mongolia and the capital of Taiwan, Taipei.

    In Italy, authorities have suspended the Sengen treaty announcing inspection of passengers travelling on aircrafts from countries which have been hit by the virus.

    In Greece, Health Minister, Kostas Stefanis has announced additional inspection measures for passengers of aircrafts from Asian countries and the provision of special supplies to hospitals in order to deal effectively in the event of a possible victim .

    In parallel, the Health Minister has warned hotel owners not to accept guests from countries hit by the SARS virus.

    [03] Greek Prime-minister in Budapest

    Greek Prime-minister and current EU President , Kostas Simitis will today visit Budapest, capital of Hungary today within the framework of his tour to the 24 capitals of EU member states in view of the EU summit in June.

    In Warsaw yesterday during his meeting with his Polish counterpart Letzec Miller, Mr. Simitis said that the UN should play a central role in the reconstruction of Iraq adding he was in favour of a close cooperation with the US and the UN, aimed to put an end to production and use of weapons of mass destruction

    [04] Civil Servants warn of mobilisations

    The Union of Civil Servants has warned of mobilisations following the rejection by the Finance Minister, Nikos Hristodoulakis of its demands for incorporation of special benefits to the basic salary. However, both sides have agreed to meet again on May 22 for new negotiations.

    [05] Swiss Pallas Palco to close down

    The government is determined to exhaust all means to prevent the closing down of the Swiss Pallas Palco company which will leave 500 people jobless while the Industrialists Union warned that unemployment could rise by 18%-20% if the government did not take the right economic measures to favour the establishment of new firms as labour cost is no longer low in Greece.

    [06] Inner cabinet secretary proposes reform of political system

    Proposals by the secretary of the inner cabinet, Socratis Kosmidis for reforms in the political system gave rise to a number of reactions with Press and Labour Ministers , Hristos Protopappas and Tilemahos Hitiris describing them as strictly personal and Environment Minister, Vaso Papandreou commenting that such proposals would be useful at the beginning and not the end of a 4-year government term. Pasok deputy Hristos Papoutsis stressed the need for the strengthening of the government s cohesion and the materialisation of the Pasok party commitments.

    The Coalition of the Left and Progress party said that modernisation promised by the government has turned into strict neoliberalism which has entered a period of pre-election popularism while the Democratic Movement said that unrealistic theories could not solve the problems of the people.
