(19/5/2003 11:53:00 ðì) [04] EU Transport & Marine Minister meetingThe EU Transport and Marine Ministers who held an informal meeting in Patmos agreed that the basic targets of the European Union still remain shipping security and the protection of the sea environment.At the meeting, emphasis was given to the measures that will have to be taken for the development and upgrading of the offered services in the sector of shipping. Everyone agreed that the image of shipping should be improved before the European Union citizens. Merchant Marine Minister George Anomeritis pointed out that the Greek fleet is a pioneering force, since 70% of its tankers are modern with double inner sides. Moreover, the Merchant Marine proposal for the creation of a European Centre of Strategic Studies on shipping issues in Piraeus was viewed positively. Regarding the use of urban toll posts, Transport Minister Christos Verelis said that the Greek government was not concerned with the issue, reiterating that the development of the Urban Mass Transport concerns each country's strategy. Mr Verelis also said that during the meeting, special emphasis was given to the protection of the environment, adding that Greece has the biggest European bus fleet using natural gas that is environment friendly. (19/5/2003 11:54:00 ðì) [05] EU Police Chiefs meet in CreteThe European Union Police Chiefs are holding a meeting in Crete today, aiming at creating a federal European Police structure on the basis of the American FBI.Presiding the meeting is Greek Police Chief Fotis Nasiakos, who is expected to propose the creation of the so-called 'red' telephone line between Police Chiefs. Included in the agenda are the issues of terrorism, asymmetric threats, the Islamic terrorist danger, organised crime, illegal migration and ways of combating it under the EU auspices in Bosnia Herzegovina.
