[02] Prime-minister Simitis addressed Pasok party Central Committee

Addressing the ruling Pasok party s Central Committee yesterday, Prime-minister Kostas Simitis launched a strong attack on the main opposition ND party and slammed what he described as its business interests. He charged that the conservative party s close ties with high profile businessmen were behind the recent spate of mud- slinging and accusations of corruption against Pasok.

General elections will be held at the end of the government s term in spring 2004, he reiterated once again and stressed that the intervening time was a period for hard work, solidarity and special responsibility for all ministers and Pasok officials. The Prime-minister also stressed his certainty about Pasok party s victory in the next elections, reminding that in the last elections all opinion polls indicated its defeat.

Prime-minister Simitis also referred to the fast pace of development and competitiveness of the Greek economy and the government s support to the long term unemployed. However he stressed that the government will not waste any funds on positions unsustainable in the world job market.

The ND party leader, Kostas Karamanlis said that the ruling party was in a state of panic, trying to bring back polarization and division policy and refused to accept reality. The Communist party pointed out that the unemployed and workers recently laid off bore witness to the real state of the economy.

[03] Greek Foreign Minister, Papandreou talks only with Turkey s elected government

Foreign Minister, George Papandreou declined to be drawn into a war of words with Turkey s military whose top soldier said that Turkish warplanes would continue making forays into the Athens flight information region, which he claimed was international airspace. In reply to reporters questions, Papandreou undelined that he was in discussions with the Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and not the Turkish military. However, he noted that the European Union had emphasised that the army s role is to serve a democratically elected government and not vice-versa.

Later, National Defence Minister, Yiannos Papantoniou warned that any potentially hostile incident , provoked by Turkey in the Aegean, would postpone Ankara s European prospects for many years.

[04] Cyprus ready to negotiate UN peace plan

Cyprus is ready at any time for negotiations on the UN Secretary General, Koffi Annan s reunification plan, said Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, who is presently visiting Athens.
